We were lucky to catch up with Julia Osorno recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think the first step is defining what success is. It’s a subjective matter, but I would say success is when a person manages to overcome themselves in spite of their particular circumstances. Sometimes being successful comes with the little things! I’ve witnessed people who might not be considered “successful” in terms of their wealth or their recognition, but who have managed to go from barely being able to get up from bed to working full time in gigantic well recognized companies.
I think the three keys to being successful are perseverance, support, and having goals that are worth it. Perseverance is key to continue practicing and not allow failure to stop you. It’s essential to always have people that are willing to support you and be there for you when you need them. These people are hard to find, but they are the greatest asset you could ever have! They will make it worth it no matter how much you fail. Their honesty and feedback will be the backbone of your continued growth. Finally, having a goal that is worth the work for you is critical. It’s easy to want the things that society tells you you should want, but having goals that you choose for yourself will drive you more than anything else will. Always do your best! Sometimes that means you need to find and enjoy success in the small everyday things that you might find harder than other people to do!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My names is Julia and I am a Digital Designer! I was born and raised in Mexico City. I’ve always been attracted not only to art, but also music, movies, and nature! When I graduated from high school in Mexico, I decided I wanted to study abroad to pursue a degree in design at Full Sail University. Upon arriving to the US, my life completely changed! I fell in love with the culture, the style of education, and the people around me. It was not all easy though, I struggled a lot to adapt and afford to live here. I had to work really hard through school to get to where I am today, but it’s all been worth it!
I currently live in Miami with my husband working for a sports retailer called Fanatics! I create all sorts of fun stuff (photo edits, product designs, and sometimes some 3D prototypes!) with an awesome team. I’ve had the privilege of creating assets for multiple sports leagues including the NBA, NFL, Nascar, and more. My dream is to one day work on the production of some super high-end motion graphics for one of my favorite artists! I think what sets my team and I apart from others is how much trust, communication, and passion for design we all share!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I think people forget that a lot of people that are considered industry experts are willing to help you out and respond to questions. I was lucky enough to meet Michael Cardwell the Founder of Digital Brew once. I was amazed to find out how approachable and helpful he was with me and my colleagues. He went so far as to give me specific feedback on a project that turned out so much better because of him! I’ve found that some pretty big names in my industry are very approachable and wonderful people willing to help and answer questions.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I grew up thinking I could not decide how my life was going to be. When I was younger I thought I had to follow the same things everyone did, stay in the same place, and work the same jobs. Everyone I knew went to the same schools and worked the same jobs that their parents had. My mom is a psychologist, and my dad an engineer. For the longest time I kind of thought that was going to be the path I had to take. After many years, I realized I could do more than I previously thought. I went to study abroad, and got a job in a country I never imagined I would end up in. The funniest part is that all it took was for somebody to ask me if I’d like to do it – and for me to ask myself, why not?
