We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julia Luckett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Julia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
One of the key elements of the wedding day is to capture beautiful family photographs in a timely manner. I have had more than a few clients who have families with complicated divorces, estranged relatives, health challenges and more. I work with my clients to understand all the dynamics and limitations and customize the family photo experience to fit into the needs of that family. This means creating a mindful order of how certain people are grouped together, locations that work for folks with limited mobility, all while keeping things flowing at a brisk pace!
Julia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Drawing from a background in documentary photography, I create imagery that feels intuitive and sincere. I am known for my nuanced method and bringing intuitive direction to poignant moments.
Some people view me as a wedding photographer, but I’m really an art director. Documenting milestone moments in people’s lives is not for the faint of heart, and my whole approach is deeply tailored to each client. It’s my job to see all the scenes, anticipate how they may play out, and capture everything in a way that conveys the feeling and nuance of that moment. There are certain moments I will direct and others that are completely organic, so much of capturing these moments is about creating the right space for it all to be meaningful. The way I think of photographing a wedding is like creating a unique chefs tasting menu for each celebration, one that aligns with the client’s tastes, the season, their desires for the wedding day, and everything in between. It’s about creating photographs that feel like the texture of day.
I live on an island in Vermont and often travel to illuminate the remarkable stories of couples.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Being a wedding photographer can be isolating, and finding a community for fellow photographers or colleagues has been truly helpful. I often have co-working zoom dates with these friends where can have a little water cooler catch up moment, and then work together virtually.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Weddings and what is relevant to connecting with clients seems to change constantly. Methods that were consistent a year ago, can be irrelevant very quickly. Being able to change with the times is one of my greatest strengths.
