We were lucky to catch up with Julia Linger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents are the core of who I am. Without their support I have no idea where I would be. I mean, probably in their house. From a young age, my parents were always driving me to rehearsals or shows. My dad has been my number one supporter, and number one subject in my writing (in which he always somehow lets me do). He also encourages me to dream big, which I wouldn’t be able to do without him.
My mother who is no longer with us, she sat me down at a very young age and taught me to focus on other people and academics before considering acting. She would tell me “I want people to love you for who you are, not what you are”, and that stuck with me to this day. Just being a kind human to other people, no matter the status or how they can “help you” is the most important thing.
They also taught me to floss everyday, which my dentist is very grateful for.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After working on the corporate side of entertainment for three years, and also a pandemic (you may have heard of it) I realized I was stuck in my life. So I changed it. I decided to pursue performing and writing as a full time career and have never looked back. I am beyond proud of every little thing I have accomplished on the way, as well as knowing every single person that has had my back and supported me in this journey.
I am grateful not a single person in my life questioned my life change. I am so grateful for them, and strive to support and encourage other artists in the same way my family and friends do for me.
I try to base my comedy and acting in my life experiences, unfortunately many of which revolve around grief. I think the world needs more stories of the human existence and experience, and that is what I try to create.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having someone come up to me after a show, or performance, or reading my work and saying ‘I feel seen’ or ‘that was so honest’ or ‘I have to share this with *insert name here*’. Knowing that I made someone, anyone, feel seen or heard by my work is one of my proudest accomplishments.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to make my late mother proud of who I have become. She won’t be able to physically join me on my journey as I grow, but everyday I am alive and can make a tiny difference in this world feels like a privilege, and motivates me to work harder.
