We were lucky to catch up with Julia Lewis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Julia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
There has always been a lack of inclusion and diversity with the marketing industry. In every room I walked in I was alone in my blackness and not being understood/seen.
I knew that there were other women in marketing who shared a similar experience/feeling. Black Women In Marketing started as an internship program.
I wanted to mentor, develop, work with, and pour into other women in marketing industry. From there, it grew. Developing a network and community of women who need help, want resources and want to take up space!
Creating Black Women In Marketing was inevitable. It became as I was becoming and only God can take credit for where it is now. I prayed so many months for a team who felt my vision and wanted to help others.
Here we are, building, empowering, saying less and doing more— daily.

Julia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Julia Lewis. I am from the south side of Chicago, born and raised — with Jamaica as my playground.
They call me the jack of trades, miss “I just wanna help people” — or Julie. Lol.
I got into marketing my existing freely as a creative. Self-taught, passion, curiosity and delusion got me here. There’s a lot that I do — from website design to fashion design.
Black Women In Marketing helps businesses tell their story and defines their brand. We offer many services and I am extremely proud to have help multiple BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation has been built from transparency and trust. If my name is on it, it’s STAMPED. My work ethic is noticed often. How I curate things is unlike any other and how badly I desire to help people can’t be taught.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
“I can do it ALL, myself.” — pay attention to that coma.
I had to unlearn that I don’t need help. Having a team has been the best things that has ever happened to me. They make Black Women In Marketing feel like home.
