We were lucky to catch up with Julia James recently and have shared our conversation below.
Julia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I am a singer/songwriter from the Boston area in Massachusetts. When it comes to story-telling, it is so important and therapeutic to me. Reaching for a pencil and paper became the healthiest habit and I am so thankful for that. Having lived and spent time in Nashville and Boston, as well as visiting and working in Los Angeles, my writing has never felt boxed in by a single genre. I am constantly surrounded by different types of people, music, and experiences. I am inspired by artists like Matt Maeson, Still Woozy, Amy Winehouse, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Kehlani, and more! Creativity delivers inspiration and experience and I hope I can give somebody a spark, just like others did for me. I hope my music can give your ears a hug.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
It is all about the drive and passion. If you lack drive and passion, you will be at a standstill creatively. Writers block is something I have struggled with, but I received some great advice about it: “Writers block is about getting ahead by just getting started”. You have to be surrounded by people that you trust, appreciate, and enjoy being around. My band, Miss Karma, means the world to me. My producer Tucker Mitchell is an integral part of my music making process. T-cap and Lilhomieliam are some of my talented best friends. Tuck is my partner-in-crime and I am thankful for him and the time and effort we put into our music. My friends and I are constantly collaborating, putting on shows, and writing together. My family and friends and fans make up my support system and I couldn’t be any more grateful for that.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
