We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julia Giang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Julia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I actually started my business around the worst possible time and this was during the peak of Covid in 2020, so you can just imagine what that was like. But then you also realize that birthdays don’t just suddenly stop and even if the bakery down the street closed, people still wanted to feel that normalcy in life. So while it was the worst time globally to start a business, it was the best time locally and I’m so thankful for the people that trusted me and still let me make treats and baked goods for their families.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I created The Sugar Vibe and what got me into my business were mainly my children. I wanted to find something that I can do from home and where I can bring in that extra income. I also didn’t want to miss important milestones and events in my kid’s lives, so being able to create my own schedule definitely helped with that. I think what sets me apart is that special bond that I have with people, especially the ones that keep coming back. I feel like in a way I’m celebrating their lives with them by providing treats that they will be able to share around the table with their families..
What I’m most proud of, is how far I’ve taken my business. It used to be that I would get one order maybe every other week and at some points I felt like maybe I wasn’t doing enough, but I also feel like that’s what got me where I am today. That feeling that I need to push more. These days, I’m taking orders daily and I’m so proud of myself for that!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I remember when I first started my page The Sugar Vibe on Facebook. I watched it grow, but at the time it seemed so small and I felt like it would take forever to get anywhere! My advice is, to have patience, share to all of your community groups, talk about your business with the people you meet and believe in yourself!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word of mouth is so important! That’s why you have to make sure that every order is good and that every customer is satisfied. You may think that your order is going to one person, but that one person may have 10 other people there that will ask about your product. This is the main way to grown your business.
