We recently connected with Julia Gates and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Julia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
It’s always super crazy and awesome when people have “impossible” experiences as a direct result of my business.
I hosted a spell jar making class where we made business success spells. One of the guests told me a few days later that she had been job-searching for months, and the day after the event she woke up to her phone blowing up with job offers.
I also had a (somewhat freaky) experience at my grand-opening: a couple came in and said they got my flyer in the mail about the opening, and they had just been talking about the Pleiades (the star constellation my business is named after). I never sent anything by mail, and I never went door-to-door putting invitations onto doors or mailboxes. I still have no idea how that invitation got into their mail.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 22 year-old artist with a passion for learning about metaphysics, or “witchcraft”. I got into crystals at age 16 when a co-worker told me about a local crystal shop I should visit. Once I checked it out, I was hooked!
I started The Pleiadian Altar (“plee-ay-dee-in”) the week I got my first moldavite crystal, which is believed to point you on the path to your greater purpose. That same week I learned how to make spell jars, joined The New Utah Podcast, and was consequently invited to be a vendor at a market one of our episode guests would be hosting.
Over a year I grew and developed my business from a single farmer’s market table to a full brick-and-mortar in Murray, Utah. My glass door proudly says “The Pleiadian Altar: Ethically Sourced Metaphysical Shop & Small Business Collective”. It is a safe space for anyone from any religion or background to come and learn about witchcraft.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I take pride on answering every client DM that comes through on Instagram. Whether you found a rock and want to know what it is, have a question about spell casting, or want to place an order, all messages get the same priority. We are happy to provide educational moments to anyone who needs witchcraft tips or advice, even if you aren’t a client!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Most of my social media branding is on Instagram, with Facebook and Twitter linked so posts show up there too. We also have a TikTok and Google page set up so we can be found on almost any platform.
The biggest key to success is to have patience, post consistently, utilize hashtags and locations, and never purchase followers. It’s better to have 100 loyal followers who hype you up than 1,000 fake ones who never interact with your content.
