We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Julia Deaton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Julia below.
Julia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
So recently, I had the opportunity to save someone some serious cash monthly. She had left her 9-5 and had the option to take her COBRA coverage. For those of you who haven’t heard of COBRA, it’s basically your company’s health insurance option that is extended to you for up to 18 months after leaving your job. The thing with that, is you are then assuming the responsibility of your employer’s paid portion and your own. With that being said, the COBRA option that is offered to you through your company tends to be 2-3x more monthly than what you were paying as an employee. So with my now client, the option offered to her was over $800 monthly as a 30-something, single female. After all was said and done, I was able to get her a full coverage medical option including dental and vision for only $400 per month which saved her $4800 in insurance premiums for the year.

Julia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A little about me… well I’m a 27-year-old dog mama. I have a pitty/vizsla mix and she is a total psychopath. I’ve spent the last 5 years of my life in the healthcare field, the first 3 and a half in patient care as a Respiratory Therapist. I started my health insurance advisory business about a year and a half ago and haven’t looked back!
As for how I got here, I didn’t just wake up one day and say to myself, “I want to do health insurance!” This opportunity presented itself to me and it wasn’t anything I could pass up. I knew that Respiratory wasn’t something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It’s INCREDIBLY important work, but just wasn’t something that I wanted to do long-term. I was searching on Indeed one day, kind of fiddling around with different ideas and that’s when I happened upon the health insurance opportunity. I sat in for an interview, and my now division leader said something that really spoke to me. She said, “you can talk yourself into something just as easily as you can talk yourself out of something”. There were obviously other parts of the initial presentation that enticed me but that phrase really struck a chord with me. So I sat in on a 1-1 interview with my now mentor who told me about her success in the industry and how she worked her a** off to get to her position and it was everything that I wanted for myself. The freedom to be my own boss, the endless potential, and the opportunity to continue to benefit/care for the general public. I ended up contracting then and there and basically took off. I told myself that I was going to be a great success and that NOTHING was going to stop me from building the life that I truly desire and continuing to help people along the way.
I named my business after my grandparents because they changed my life. I lived with them when I was 20-23 and I like to call myself their charity case. I was in a dark place because of personal matters and they showed me God’s grace and all the love that I didn’t know I needed… and they basically loved me back to good health. It was my Grandpa that pushed me back into college and both my Grandma and Grandpa that insisted that they help me pay for it and they single-handedly recruited both of my parents’ help financially so that I could further my education. I can honestly say that I would either be struggling or near death if I didn’t have them and they are my angels on earth.
So with that background, I feel that I have an edge here. I had the help and support system to excel in my life and now I want to be that help and support system for others to help them excel in their own. I’m dedicated to helping and serving my current and future clients and will stop at nothing to provide excellent customer service and support for years to come.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Negative self-talk. We are our own worst critics. We can also be our worst bully too. I’m not sure this is a lesson but it was definitely a nasty habit. I used to speak so poorly about myself and my self-confidence was through the ground before I entered this line of work. This career and the team that I’m surrounded by boosted my self-confidence tremendously. When you start feeling good about yourself, you start speaking to yourself in a more positive way. It’s all connected. And when you start speaking to yourself in a positive way AND feel confident, you’re going to connect with others in a much more positive and empowering way.
So the lesson is.. people do not trust others who don’t have some sort of confidence in themselves. When you become confident in yourself, others will also be confident in you AND your abilities.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Marketing. Marketing. And more marketing.
This is something that I’m still trying to work on myself but from the seminars that I’ve done and the books that I’ve read, marketing is going to be your best friend when it comes to building clientele. From what I’ve learned so far, you need to build your brand first. What do you stand for? What’s special about you? Why do people want to choose you over the dozens of other options? And build from there!
