We were lucky to catch up with Julia Bullock recently and have shared our conversation below.
Julia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was 10 years old and I heard that Green Day was playing a concert at the local arena. I asked my dad if we could go because they were my favorite band. As soon as the first song hit, I remember thinking to myself “these guys do this for a living. So one day… I will too.” And I have never thought of doing anything else with my life since.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I sing for a band called The Foxies. But it took me a long time to build this business up. At 13 I started my first band. From 15-18 I was in my second band and I truly thought we were the next big thing. People change and time changes, so we ended up going our separate ways and that’s when I did XFactor. For “exposure” purposes. (I will never do anything like that ever again.) I spent two years at home once I was eliminated, trying to figure out what to do with my life. So I decided to become somewhat of a gypsy. I moved to Brooklyn to pursue music. But ended up working 7 days a week. I then decided to move to Phoenix where some of my co-writers lived. Ended up staying there for two years, two years too long. But that’s where I created The Foxies:) now I’m in Nashville, touring nationally and internationally, and I have my own clothing brand side hustle called Vicious Kitten.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was kicked off of an artist/label collective in Phoenix over a text. It was a dark time for me living there as is, so this message really sent me over the deep end. I allowed time to cry, and then I sent my ep to every manager I knew. The one who answered 8 years ago is currently our manager today.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’ve had this passion as a kid and I think that’s the source of my motivation… the passion. It’s an animalistic instinct that doesn’t feel fueled unless you’re working on your craft.
