We were lucky to catch up with Julia Bri recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, thanks for joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
Julia Bri Photography all started because of my very first dog, Leila. Photography was a hobby of mine prior to adopting her but I fell out of touch with it. When I adopted her, I realized I wanted to document everything. So I dusted off my old camera and took it everywhere with us. I even started to take it to the dog park to capture her playing with friends. I remember one day I showed one of the dog parents some of the shots I had gotten. I’ll never forget the look of pure excitement on her face when I showed her. That was the moment I realized I wanted to continue to spark those kinds of emotions for people with my images. I knew this was a worthwhile endeavor when I had other dog parents come up to me asking me for prints and photos of their dogs as well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
If this is your first time hearing about me, hi! I’m Julia Bri and I’m a family and pet photographer right outside of Houston. My grandpa is the whole reason I had any experiences with a camera growing up. He was kind enough to give me a hand-me-down camera when I was in middle school and the rest is history. I started out doing a lot of landscape shots until I realized my true passion was capturing people and dogs!
I work with a lot of dogs and families. Before photography, I babysat a TON. I always connected with the kids and found it healed my inner child getting to help them grow. This has translated a lot in my work when working with families with younger kids. I’m a reactive dog parent as well. I have experience with all kinds of dogs and this has helped me create a fun, stress-free environment for my clients who want to include their furbabies!
I believe what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail, as well as my experience with dogs when it comes to working with pet parents. I’m also a big music lover and incorporating music into my sessions is an absolute must. I grew up with a lot of social anxiety but music was something that always grounded me. I started creating playlists early on in my business and I’ve found you simply cannot have a bad time when your favorite song is playing.
What I would want potential clients to know about me would be that I’m a photographer for everyone. For all races, sexualities, and body types. I’m also a friend. I can be the person to help calm pre-session jitters and I’m also the person who will make you a sick playlist for us to jam to at your session. Most importantly, I believe I’m one who will always remember to capture the little details for you. The things you never want to forget. Like the face your child makes when giving you a big hug or your pup’s precious paws in the sand. I’ve got you covered.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting to spark joy in other people’s lives. It’s humbling to know the photos I take will be plastered on walls and be put in scrapbooks to remember forever. To know I played a part in pausing time for them is huge.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I’ve found that when you connect with clients on a personal/emotional level, they’re likely to do the same for you, which is huge in this industry! I can’t expect my clients to be vulnerable with me if I’m not doing the same for them. I always give my clients 110% and make sure I’m being my most authentic self with them.
