We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juli Henderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Juli, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Everything I do through the In Our Arms blog is focused on our mission to meet, support, and gather together families and caregivers serving a loved one or patient with disabilities. This desire was birthed out of our own family caregiving experience caring for our son, Robert Henderson, who passed away in 2015 from a very rare mitochondrial disease. We know what it means to feel lost and alone during an eighteen profound and complex medical journey, and our desire is to make that road a little less burdensome for others as they walk this road. “Life Unexpected” will likely one day touch all our lives. We want to create a community that is inclusive and available when that occurs.
In Our Arms blog is a passion project of my voice studio as I encourage my students to use their voices to change the world! As for JH Voice Studio, the mission is for my vocal and public speaking students (young and old) to develop their vocal instruments to the best of their ability and use their voices to bring joy and hope to others. I hope my students will remember me for being a trustworthy teacher who poured into their lives with intentional, quality instruction and who had a heart that cared about them beyond just their vocal growth. “Equipping the Voices of the Future” is my goal each time I open my doors for my students to join me in new discoveries!

Juli, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a vocal instructor, public speaker, special needs advocate, and owner of JH Voice Studio, LLC. I founded my blog, “In Our Arms,” which is my passion project in February 2021. Along with my husband, I share the story of our late son, Robert Henderson.
As the mother of a child with profound medical complexities and disabilities who passed at the tender age of eighteen, I seek to write and give hope to our thousands of readers. I founded a private Facebook group in 2021 where individuals, families and caregivers share resources and find support. I know personally the need for and value of such assets.
I have had the honor to serve our community as a longstanding nonprofit board member for those living with disabilities on the boards of Kinetic Kids, Respite Care of San Antonio, Any Baby Can of San Antonio, The Multi-Assistance Center (The MAC) at Morgan’s Wonderland, and Morgan’s Inclusion Initiative. In August 2021, I launched the In Our Arms “Breathe” candle in collaboration with a purpose-driven brand, School Scents, to help support our In Our Arms advocacy initiatives.
With the support of corporate sponsors and industry professionals, I have had the joy of offering monthly one night hotel stays to special needs families, donating “Breathe” candles to moms caring for a child with disabilities, and a “Room Refresh” for a child with a disability.
I believe what sets my voice studio and advocacy work apart from others may be that I do each task with a commitment to use my voice to encourage, strengthen and educate others. My voice is my instrument to make a difference! I am persuaded that each of us has been given the unique privilege of using our voice to create a more inclusion society be it through the arts or through community service.
I have enjoyed watching my voice students succeed in their careers throughout Texas and internationally. I am most proud of the fact that many of them have shared in my passion and love for persons with disabilities.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My strategy has been to teach very well in a trustworthy space, and offer my voice students practical ways to maintain good vocal health. I believe because of that focus, my students refer me to others. Most of the time, I find it difficult to advertise for new students because we frequently have a waitlist.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in teaching is to make sure my voice students understand that they carry in their bodies a very unique, God-given gift that has the ability to move others as they learn how to use it properly and effectively. My creative journey is driven by watching them find their voices, develop their potential, and successfully moving an audience with their performance.
With regard to In Our Arms, my writing and community service is driven by my love and support for people with disabilities, and my commitment to bring more awareness about their needs.
