We recently connected with Jules Kennedy and have shared our conversation below.
Jules, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to not only authentically document moments of connection, but capture the soul within a moment so it can live on for generations to come. My mother passed away when I was seven years old so photographs play such an important role in me feeling connected to her. Without photos, I would have such few memories to hold on to in order to keep her legacy alive. With that, I feel deeply drawn to telling the story of all women. Capturing the essence, the beauty, the energy they hold. I want women to feel empowered not only when they see a photo of themselves, but through the entire process of having their photo taken. I want to help women feel more connected and alive through the art of photography. The value photographs hold is deeper than we often realize.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Since as long as I can remember, art has been a fluent language for me. I was first drawn to painting and drawing before I found photography. Once I picked up a camera, I fell in love with capturing the world through my lens – documenting people’s stories. It felt like a superpower. After graduating with my Bachelors in Photojournalism, I moved to Chicago to pursue photography full-time. I began working with influencers and small business owners, and then progressed into wedding, family, and lifestyle photography. After seven years, I made the decision to follow my heart and move out west to Denver, Colorado. I have always dreamed of creating photographs with grand landscapes and lush nature, and this is just the spot. It’s only been a few months and I feel more at home than ever before.
My approach to photography is super laidback and stress-free. I want our time together to feel like friends hanging out and having fun. When you’re relaxed, you’re able to let your guard down and invite me into your world — THAT’S when the magic happens. A reason I love photography so much is because I get to be a witness to so many life-altering, love-filled moments. I do not try to manufacture this – I’m there to document the connection I see and make you feel beautiful and loved along the way.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
For the first few years of my business, I was primarily photographing influencers. I had worked with over 100 influencers from all around the US, shooting anywhere from 10-15 photoshoots a week. It was A LOT, but I did what I thought I had to do in order to build my brand and maintain steady business. However, as more time went on, I was getting so burnt out. I was exhausted by the constant shooting, editing, and delivering process, overwhelmed by the amount of inquiries coming in, and just unclear what my end goal really was. After photographing a couple weddings and a handful of families, I knew this was the direction I was meant to pivot towards. I needed a change and craved more connection to my clients and the work I was creating. I slowly began taking on less and less influencers and small businesses, and started taking on more weddings and family sessions. I began creating work I truly loved and felt inspired by. It was scary – I doubted myself several times – but it was so so worth the risk.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes yes yes! I am a big fan of Catalina Jean’s SEO course, India Earl’s pricing course, and Kinzie Madsen’s Million Dollar Brand course. The education I’ve received from these women has made such a huge impact on my perspective and knowledge as a business owner. Learning how to run a business is no easy feat, so it’s so important to lean on outside resources in order to really grow and evolve. I know I am a great photographer but that alone does not equal success. Once you gain business awareness, you can outsource the jobs that aren’t in your skillset and solely focus on your craft. Then things really start to get fun!
