We were lucky to catch up with Jules Horvath recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jules, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
For me, my writing process typically starts when I get an idea for a character or a scene randomly comes into my head. Then I expand more on that idea as the weeks go on if It keeps my interest. It’s odd to admit, but the way I generate ideas almost feels like I am watching the film/episode happen in my brain. I can press pause or rewind the moments back in my head whenever I want. I feel like from there, I document “what I just watched” onto paper. Another thing that really helps complete my process is listening to music. Each project I have has a playlist to go along with it. This really helps me retain the ideas I have, and stick to a specific tone for each one of my works. Once the characters are fully developed and the story is clearer to me, I then start to “connect the dots” on what my turning points/act breaks are based on all the moments I “saw” in my head. Then the writing process starts! I map out where I want the entire story to go, do a proposal, beat sheet, and write the actual script. Post-it notes are also a huge part of the way I organize my thoughts, I typically divide the beats based on each character.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in New York before moving out to Los Angles all on my own in 2021. As a kid, I was always interested in the entertainment industry and was influenced creatively by my father. Growing up I thought that writing was just a hobby, but as I got older, I realized that storytelling was something I was truly passionate about. In my time out here in Los Angeles, I have worked professionally as a freelance script supervisor and production assistant. I received my BFA in screenwriting and since graduating, I started a production company alongside my boyfriend and one of my best friends.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I have been so fortunate to have supportive parents that encourage me endlessly to pursue screenwriting for television. But, I can also acknowledge that not everyone has supportive friends and families. I think the hardest thing for people to realize is that success is not immediate and that it can be a long process. Most give up far too quickly, but the reality is you just have to continue to extend yourself as much as possible. Non-creatives might struggle with understanding the fact that it takes a lot of time, effort, and patience to fully breakout. The industry is so cut-throat but I really believe that the key is to just do it in any capacity you can and don’t stop. For me, that’s enough motivation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having the opportunity to explore different kinds of people and characters who are grappling with topics that aren’t typically explored is the most rewarding aspect of writing for me. As a writer, I heavily enjoy researching and learning about all sorts of different things to craft my stories around. As a producer, I really love the collaborative aspect of working with other creatives. With our production company, it is extremely rewarding to have one project in post and another one in pre production at the same time. It is an incredible rush of adrenaline when everything we work on comes to fruition, while simultaneously we are onto the next thing!
