Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jules DeLorenzo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jules , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
It’s funny when I look back at the trajectory of my life, now that I’m standing here at 30, living some of my wildest dreams, being able to intertwine such a strong passion for photography and make money doing it has been life changing. I worked as a barber in NYS for close to 10 years. Which led me to understand humans in a very close up way. It’s said your doctor, your dentist and your hair stylist are the top 3 services that actually have to touch another human being and its true. Being in the service industry shaped me to be hypervigilant of others and act accordingly. Having an already long, loving background of photography, (buying my first camera in 2014 and skipping around the national parks and roadtripping) fuzing those two qualities together became my formula for pursuing a dream of monetizing a passion that brings great joy and I wish I had started sooner. I don’t regret much in life because I am who I am because of it, but I do wish I started sooner in this industry and took myself more seriously in the sense that it wasn’t impossible and I could really create something great instead of thinking it wouldn’t amount to anything.
Jules , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey began when I got into photography at a young age, always researching the best phone camera to buy or digital camera to document just about anything and everything, always dissociating on some weird editing app and obsessing over filters. By 2014 I bought my first dslr camera and quickly learned the ins and outs, which led me to fall in love with capturing moments and documenting the things not everyone typically sees through the naked eye. I think what sets me apart from other photographers is my soul. I am very intentional in my work and how it is perceived through my eyes and my heart. I try to find angles not everyone sees. Evoke emotions through intensity and finding those tiny details that truly capture the emotional depth behind the scene itself. Heart and soul mean everything to me and I want it to ooze out of every shot I capture. I want my clients to feel something they might not have felt prior to my sessions, I want to invoke feelings from a deeper place, to capture depth and mood in a way others don’t. As a poet and photographer, I try to get a feel of who my clients are underneath the skin, and with that vital information, I then curate and create a scene for them to open up to themselves in a really cool. artistic way. I mainly do creative portraiture, nature landscapes, branding, lifestyle, and weddings. I never want to be defined as one but rather float around in all things. As an artist I deem fluidity so important and being defined as one thing stifles any creative spark inside of me. As a spiritual being I feel as though my purpose is to create, to be of service, to capture love in all of its forms and to allow my soul to guide me on this journey through the lens.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to stay authentic to myself and my soul. I am the biggest advocate on being authentic and living your truth, and that means staying true to what makes your soul light up. I think this industry has given me that freedom to stay as uniquely myself as I can be without stress and agony. Being an artistic creator has helped me understand myself, my needs, what works for me and what doesn’t and gives me endless opportunities to continue creating and birthing into the phsycoal world what my heart and soul reflect on the inside. It’s wild to think of life in the sense of time, because it’s so short and quite unpredictable but the little time we do have on this earth, there has been no greater joy than being able to come home to myself after a long day and say ” I’m here and I’ve made it with my art ” “my art means something and that’s what I do it for”
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think the goal is very simple. What keeps me going is the freedom in this industry to continue to be authentic and creative and weird and whoever shows up and says “hey your work speaks to me, let’s work together!” Is the most beautiful feeling and that alone keeps me hungry for more. I think my work is an extension of my soul so when someone appreciates it and sees it beyond the face value, what it becomes then is these clients begin to see your heart and soul and the connection from there becomes so real and so beautiful.
