We recently connected with Jules Annen and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jules, thanks for joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
Why is my hair falling out? What is the root cause of my cystic acne? Why do I have frequent migraines?
Since becoming a Cosmetologist in 1998, countless questions and conversations with my salon clients regarding health issues inspired me to learn more about whole body wellness.
In 2015, I got serious about making a career change into healthcare. I enrolled in an online Masters’s program for Integrative Medicine provided by an Eastern Traditional Chinese Medicine institution. Courses focused on both Eastern principles and Western Allopathic Medicine. I am grateful that the program taught both approaches.
In 2016, I completed my health coach training through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and became a digital health coach. I coached over 120 clients simultaneously, all on the verge of chronic disease.
2020 was my career-solidifying year. It became evident that many people’s health issues stemmed from chronic inflammation. I enrolled in a specialized doctorate program to learn more about identifying and correcting toxin overload-when your body has taken in more toxins than it can process, leading to inflammation.
Changing careers at age 46 was a giant leap of faith. But I’m so glad I did because now I can be a resource with my books, low-tox podcast, and blog and help people access the appropriate care.
Jules, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My interest in health and wellness began in 1997 when I became a student at The Aveda Institute in Minneapolis, MN. Aveda is based on the ancient wisdom of Eastern Ayurvedic Medicine.
My focus is promoting low-tox products and services through my podcast, books, blog, and self-care line to lessen the toxic burden on our bodies and the environment.
I also write for a few health organizations specializing in diagnostic testing and integrative medicine, which helps me guide those needing preventative or personalized care.
I don’t believe restrictive diets or extreme lifestyle changes are the ultimate solutions. Instead, reducing toxicity, including toxic relationships and thoughts, is key to maintaining mind-body balance.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
I have owned several businesses, and I can offer one business piece of advice: Make sure your contracts are ironclad!
I have had lawyers look over my contracts, whether it be for a sale of a company or a leasing of a property, but later learned the contract had loopholes. These loopholes have cost me tens of thousands of dollars.
So now, if I need to write a contract, I have more than one lawyer comb through it for possible ambiguities. While it may cost me more on the front end, I know that I’m protected from losses in the future.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I wouldn’t change the trajectory of my life, as every joyful and painful experience has shaped me into who I am today.
Growing up, I aspired to become a professional writer. Then, as a pre-journalism major, I bombed my first journalism course. Devastated, I dropped out of college and enrolled at The Aveda Institute as “plan B.”
With the opportunity to speak with hundreds of clients about their life and health struggles, I learned to be open-minded and empathetic. I may not have possessed those traits straight out of medical or journalism school. There are some things schools can’t teach; only real-world experience can.
Now I get to combine all my education, practical and life experience to be a wellness resource for my brand and several other health organizations.
