Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jules. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jules, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Thus far, the most meaningful project I’ve created has been the writing and recording of my new EP. The past eight months of my life have been some of the hardest times I have ever endured. Through that period, there were many songs that could not have been written if I hadn’t gone through such a dark time with my mental health. Although I’ve been writing my own songs since the age of 10, I feel I have never written anything as honest as this upcoming EP. I am so proud of the work that myself, my mentors, and my producers have put into this record, and my hope is to share my experiences with those who listen to my music with as much honesty as I could.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started singing at the age of five years old, and at the age of six, my parents got me my first guitar. I started getting into music because my parents would always play the Grammy’s along with other award shows when they were on, and I loved watching the performances of all the artists on the TV, and that’s when I knew I was serious about wanting music to become my career. I was able to score guitar lessons for Christmas when I was eight years old, and started writing my own songs when I was ten. These days I write, record, and release music that is available on all platforms, perform across the valley, along with being a full time music student at Arizona State University’s Popular Music Program. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in my career through the growth of my writing and my writing process, I believe it’s what sets me apart from other musicians in the field. The goal with my music has always been to make sure I’m writing things as honestly and authentically to me as I can.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A story from my journey that may show resilience would be when I was fifteen, I auditioned for season 18 of NBC’s The Voice. I had made it through the blind auditions with two chair turns from Blake and Kelly, and I chose Kelly. During the battle round of the show, I was sent home after my duet was taped. This was very difficult for me, but as time went on, and even as they never aired that duet, I found that it was a blessing in disguise. I grew so much from that time period, however, it was an extremely difficult experience to have at that age in front of a live audience. I know now that I would not be where I am without that experience, and I will always be grateful for the many ways it grew my skill set.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
If I have one goal in my music career, it is to help others. I believe music has a universal power to heal, and through my writing, I hope I can help comfort others in feeling less alone. With that, a long term goal I have is to help other artists, specifically independent artists, in their musical endeavors by owning my own independent record label. I believe the music industry is currently changing for the better, and I’d like to be a part of that change one day in any way I can. I’m a huge advocate of artist rights, especially being an independent artist myself. I believe by starting my own label one day, I could really help other artists succeed in the way that I have always also wanted to.
