We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jules. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jules below.
Jules, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I grew up with a love of baking, and of bread in particular. Some of my earliest memories are of playing at my grandparent’s house while my grandma baked breads, pies, cookies, etc. for her gift basket business. Later, she taught me how to make bread, and I specifically remember learning how to hand-knead dough until it achieved just the right consistency. Being influenced by such a kind and strong woman, running her own small business out of her home and being passed down the skills she learned from her own grandmother are what inspired me to create Bread of the Month Club. I wanted to share that legacy with the people around me through the magic of bread.
Jules, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Bread of the Month Club is a monthly subscription based service. I bake and deliver a different artisan or unique bread to your doorstep each month. I try to come up with recipes that are not something you could walk into any store or bakery and purchase. Each one is special to me and I love sharing them with others and seeing people’s excitement when their Bread of the Month arrives each time.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Outside of the art of actually creating breads, building up an audience on social media seems to be an art of it’s own. It has taken all of nearly 3 years to get to where I am, and I still have a long way to go. I started by finding local businesses and sending messages and giving likes to them and some of their followers. I try to stay relevant and active by posting stories and reels frequently to keep people interested. While I’m sure there is a science to the algorithm, I am really just winging it and hoping that my existing followers stick around and new followers find me and are drawn in by all the beautiful bread content.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I will be very real here. I run this business completely on my own. I create and research the recipes, do all the ingredient shopping and planning, all the test baking, all the photography and videography, all the social media content management, all the email marketing and customer outreach, all the packaging and all the deliveries. And let me tell you, it has not been easy. Each month, typically on the big baking day, I hit a point where I reach exhaustion. Keeping this little bread business alive is sometimes a real challenge! In those moments, I often forget why I do this. But THEN, after someone receives and tastes my breads, sometimes they’ll send me a note or post on Instagram about how much they loved the bread, and that makes it all worth it. Feedback from my customers is literally what keeps BOTMC alive. I wouldn’t keep doing this if it weren’t for people telling me how much they love it.
