We were lucky to catch up with Juice GQ recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Juice, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Sports along with Music is the glue that binds humanity together. Both are art forms in their own right. Our ultimate goal is to combine the global creative community with the likeness of the corporate sports industry. Tycoon Sports wants to focus solely on unlocking the creative capacity of its athletes, while elevating the expression of the brand we are helping them build.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The journey began with BET Networks, where I started as a production assistant and worked my way into being an independent contractor for BET Productions alongside my partner, Khomari Flash. We developed this Full-Service Media Agency in order to manage athletes’ brands, marketing, and creative campaigns. Not only is it our mission to connect athletes with brand partnerships, but also to elevate their vision of creative possibilities within these brand deals to elevate their own brands.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivoting from the music industry to the sports industry was a major shift. While managing Cam Kirk Studios, I headed the Music Department and its creative projects. Allowing my team and I to network and work closely with a multitude of music artists. Throughout this time I’ve noticed how record labels surround their artist with creative marketing teams that help push their brand to the masses and make it their responsibility to connect them with their desired audiences.
I wondered why nobody initiated this team-like concept to athletes on a major platform. Of course, you have agents, managers, and teams that connect the athlete to these deals but we have the resources to ideate, create, and produce said contact along with making these deals.
Once I noticed that there was a major drop-off in this department for athletes, I decided to pivot my interest from musicians to helping athletes for the time being.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
My partner/cofounder, Khomar Flash, and I met in the summer of 2016. I was a production assistant for my second BET Awards in Los Angeles. I was still fairly new to all the operations and I was just depending on my networking and work ethic to get me into the right rooms As I was reseting the production room one morning, one of my supervisors asked did I get my daily assignment. This being my second day and I spent most of the first day networking, making store runs, and doing what they call Go-Fur work. It’s of course a great way to start a career but it was alot of run and grab this and run and grab that, they just weren’t expecting me to actually run to get it done.
I recognized this supervisor from the day before and he pulled me to the side of the production table where the production sheet was sitting. Showed me a long page of the layout of the entire day and he assigned me to a camera operator. That camera operator happened. to be Khomari.
The assignment was to shoot the BET Experience, the weekend festivities BET holds in await of the actual award show on Sunday evening, and to shoot the celebrity basketball game. Throughout the game we would have to get a celebrity interview with the players and audience members. Throughout. this time Khomari got tired of holding his camera which was one of those big shoulder cameras. He let me jold it and shoot for like 30 minutes, and I honestly could not see how they do that job!! It was so heavy and required so much movement and attention to detail, definetly. ot for me!
That was the day I decided I wanted to be a director for sure, and Khomari’s been my mentor ever since.
