We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Juhoon Hong. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Juhoon below.
Juhoon, appreciate you joining us today. Is there a historical figure you look up to? Who are they and what lessons or values have you learned from them?
If I have to choose one of the many historical figures that influenced my view of this world it will be Bertrand Russell. The desire to explore the world is the most fundamental element that defines me. However, the world is full of incomprehensible things, and I often feel overwhelmed by the complexities of the world. Bertrand Russell and his words have been one of my guides in exploring such a world. Thanks to him, I have learned what it means to be guided by knowledge and inspired by love in life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
It is an honor to introduce myself to everyone. My name is Juhoon Hong, and I’m a director and 3d animator. Currently, I’m working as a CG artist at MAKE LLC. As part of the team, I provide variations of 3d elements, mostly creating layout, rigging, and animating. MAKE recently released various micro short series on the YouTube channel ‘MAKE originals’ and I contributed mostly to the 3d department on animation, cloth & hair simulation.
I got into the industry after I graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2022. I produced, directed, and created the animated short ‘Detached’(2022) which includes writing, visual development, storyboarding, modeling, texturing, rigging, setting layout, lighting, animating, rendering, and editing. When creating a story, my main interests are relationships, which can be as big as between the universe and the individual. Passionate storytellers are my inspirations and I’m more than happy to share mine with the world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being an artist ‘is’ the reward as I live through this life. It fuels my actions and thoughts. However, as a person who loves storytelling, there is another rewarding aspect of being an artist and that is I can craft my own tool for communication. Verbal communication itself is already an amazing tool but let alone it feels like there’s a limit because of its simultaneous elements. Written or visual stories let audiences actively participate in interpreting and that is the beauty I fell in love with while being an artist. Of course, it can be crystal clear and serve as an informational element but what’s amazing is that it can also be as vague as an abstract art in which the audience has more room to participate. My pleasure as an artist lies in this concept of inviting people as their own narrators.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The biggest struggle for me as a creative is to choose what I want to deliver to the audience. Some might think people are not very interested so we don’t have to worry about how the audience is going to think. However, responsibility is important whether it’s about an art or not. I try to avoid a mindset like “I’ll do it just because I can”. Such actions without thinking it through can be misleading and those accumulated actions will affect our communities.
