Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Juel Anthony . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Juel , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I want to share the backstory behind my first project and album titled “5:44” referencing the Bible verse Matthew 5:44 “Love your enemies and pray for the ones who persecute you.”
Not too long ago I was saved and decided fully trust God with my life. I felt like it was time to put out a project about his love.
I revert back to the Bible for inspiration for my music and I try my best to apply these concepts to my life. There are many messages in the Bible regarding love but I chose Matthew 5:44 to be the one to talk about because I feel this is the hardest type of love to execute. Loving our enemies is a tall task and usually we want to resort to violence and sometimes pull out guns to combat the hate. I noticed that .44 is slang for a pistol and many rappers want to say “hit them with the .44” or any other pistol which is a symbol of hate. Fighting fire with fire never results in a good outcome. Instead of using this conventional route, I want to twist it around and still play off that term while insinuating we need to love and be calm with each other in the face of hate. Hence we need to hit them with the 5:44 (the love)!
I also would like to tell stories about my personal life and rap in different perspectives so people can get a full picture of what my life is like. I get deeper in that aspect towards the end of my album.
Growing up multiracial wasn’t easy and I was searching for my identity for the longest time but I’m happy to say I found it through God and by learning the true meaning of the gospel. I believe the message of the gospel and album has the capability to help save many lives. It won’t get any easier when it comes to the backlash but it’s what this erratic world needs.
Juel , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey guys my name is Jordyn aka Juel Anthony and I am a 28 year old music producer and gospel hip hop artist from Cincinnati, Ohio born in New York. I grew up listening to a lot of hip hop and music and was always intrigued with the process. I was in band for awhile throughout high school but I didn’t proceed to do it any longer afterwards. I wanted to have little more leeway and room for creativity with my musical endeavors.
When I was 18 In college, I decided to start producing and writing. Eventually I started doing this for other artists as well. I currently have an LLC called “Shattered Skyz Productions” and we provide services such as recording, beat-making, mixing and mastering and songwriting.
When people see my brand, I want them to know that sky is not the limit and God can give you ample amounts of opportunities including a life you can live unashamed.
I am also now apart of a production team and we are attempting to produce music for sync licensing opportunities that involves tv and film projects. We are in touch with many experts in this field and are constantly getting our music placed in these projects.
This is another great way to get music out there to the public and I plan to stay producing for tv and film projects for awhile.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Our way is not the best way to live. I have seen it with many people who are close to me and I can tell you from experience that if we go outside of God’s will we will face a myriad of consequences.
To keep a long story short, a few years ago i hit the wheel pretty tipsy and witnessed a major car accident that barely missed us. I had my best friend in the car and didn’t think about his safety. I was selfish and was wanting to numb my pain the wrong way.
In hindsight I was sure this was God telling me to never do this again.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I’m starting to get into it a little more. I feel this can potentially be a lucrative space for creatives!
