Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Judy Mai. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Judy, thanks for joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
Wow, this will take some digging to figure out when is the first time I got paid for my creative work. I believe it was during the pandemic when a popcorn brand wants to promote their product in Costco, so they reach out to me to create photos for them and showcase their delicious popcorn. Apparently, it is really popular in Costco, and some of my friends always know the brand. It was first time I was getting a paid collaboration with a popcorn brand, and I was super excited to post about their popcorn on my social media page. I scream in excitement and told my friend to help me pose with the logo shown in the picture. This was before reels were a thing and photos were popular. I was happy to finally get paid and recognized for all the hard work I put in for content creation.

Judy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into food content creation from my good friend, Jess, whom I met while interning abroad in Hong Kong. She introduced me to the world of social media, and I am forever grateful to be exposed to this foodie community. I am UGC (user-generated content) and SF Bay Area foodie to help promote local restaurants and events. Send me a DM if you’re interested in collaborating or chit-chatting about food.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I like giving people food recommendations and being the go-to person on where to eat good food. It gives me the satisfaction that I can be dependable regarding food. And also trying new food, I was exposed to various cuisines that I believe I would never get the opportunity to if it weren’t for Instagram.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think it’s cool innovation and great way to have ownership of digital items, but I feel people with money waste so many dollars for a digital artwork like the popular ape. Instead, use it for a good cause since NFTs use a lot of energy that is harmful to the environment, and there’s a lack of regulations that can create fraud.
