We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Judy Cochrane. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Judy below.
Judy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
After writing my first memoir, Eleven Days – From 35 Million to Food Stamps…What A Family Gains When Losing the American Dream, I received an email from a reader. In Part Two of my book, I talk of my marriage and how infidelity cracked my and my husbands’ hearts wide open. So, I wasn’t surprised to hear I wasn’t alone. Here’s her email:
Dear JC, I packed a small bag a few weeks ago and headed to our lake home in South Haven, Michigan. My plan was to get away from the extremely upsetting news about my husband cheating on me. We had been together for 15 years, and we have no children. I have spent the majority of my life living large (as you say) and hid behind my luxurious lifestyle that was able to mask my anxiety and depression from early childhood past trauma. This is blunt, but I will add here that the bag was small because I didn’t plan on staying long., and by that, I mean I had planned to take the remnants of many prescription meds and end my journey here on this earth in the 7500 sq ft. dream vacation home my husband built for me. While driving through town, I stopped at the main street bookstore, as I wanted something, anything, that would temporarily distract me for at least a few hours while I also contemplated when I would make my exit.
Upon entering, there was a round wood table, and there sat your books: eleven days and the guidebook – Temporarily Closed for Self Care & Spiritual Maintenance. Although the financial loss mentioned in the tagline was not resonating with me, I did feel it would be the perfect distraction. “nothing for me to relate to in here.”
Until I got to Part Two! Not only was there infidelity, but you also mentioned our sweet sacred South Haven, Michigan! I literally stood up from my chair and finished Part Two standing up. I read the book in 16 hours, missing my deadline to exit this earth.
It distracted me long enough to recognize my role and responsibility in this flawsome (as you call it) marriage. I saw my role and responsibility in my own self-care & spiritual maintenance as well. I wasn’t doing the work I needed in self-discovery. I could no longer run and hide. The truth in so many parts of your book made me aware of the voids in m life. Mainly, and most importantly, I stayed in South Haven until I felt strong enough to go back and face him and face the truth of our marriage.
Not sure if staying married is in the cards for us. But forgiveness is. I’m not there yet, either…but after reading this, I know that forgiving myself for my role comes first, and I will trust the rest to unfold as it needs to.
Thank you for having the courage to write this.
If you ever question yourself for sharing such raw and transparent feelings, please stop.
You can remind yourself of this – A life was saved. And possibly, a marriage too. I’ll let you know.
All the Best, Caroline
I encourage others to write their story because writing is a magical, powerful, and swift healer. But the part that will blow your mind and heart wide open is what it has the potential to heal in others.
Ghost Writing, Book Coaching, and Publishing light me up. This career never feels like work for me…it’s simply a calling and now a mission.
And Caroline’s email was the last time I ever questioned whether or not to question telling the whole truth, nothing but the truth, so help me God.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Have you ever had to pivot?
I share a story of a time when I had to pivot in life in my memoir – Eleven Days – From 35 Million to Food Stamps…What a Family Gains When Losing the American Dream – I basically had to lose myself to find myself, again while spending time alone housesitting in Santa Barbara, Ca.
“Raw. Honest. Truly captivating. Seemingly ordinary people, share an extraordinary journey in Cochrane’s seek and rescue mission where she finds a clearer understanding of self, others and circumstance. She shares this story with transparency while wrapped in humor and insightful intensity with her honest discoveries of who she is, and in some ways who we all are.” Karen Callan – Author of Just In Time
In her 30’s, Judy Cochrane had by most standards realized the American Dream. In 2000, her husband Bill’s start-up company sold for 90 million. Their college romance and tireless work ethic built a bright future for their family, as well as a portfolio of 35 million. But just as the stars aligned for the 90 million sale of their company, they also fell apart; from living in a gated home perched on a mountaintop in Tucson, Arizona to life in a beat-up rental, without job security and on food stamps.
With pressure at every turn: 3 young kids, a failing economy, health concerns, a troubled marriage, and the loss of everything the family had built, time alone and getting grounded seemed impossible. With what little faith she could muster, she sought for a miracle. It came in the form of an 11-day housesitting opportunity in Santa Barbara, California. During Cochrane’s quest, her spiritual guides and new friends included: a surfer-musician, a dying writing professor, an Episcopal minister, a gifted intuitive healer, a pair of tattoo artists, a septuagenarian yoga practitioner, a homeless preacher, a foul-mouthed auto mechanic; two dogs and a cat, and the Pacific Ocean.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I have stayed consistent with not allowing myself to get caught up in the chase for a client or customer. I don’t want to try too hard to get another person’s attention. I have found that every video or caption I post that screams authenticity and imperfection is the one that gets the most attention.
I think we are entertained by beautiful perfect posts and videos, but I don’t think those create the “real” client connection one needs in order to grow your business.
My reputation is I keep it real, so you can too.
I’m not here to judge. I am here to uplift and build an amazing business around that…for the two of us to prosper, grow and have some fun.
