Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Judson Vereen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Judson, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Being a writer since a very young age, the impact that a well-designed book cover can offer to my personal projects was always a great concern. I started to design the covers of my books myself, and being an artist that worked with elements of collage and text, I found that I had all the inspiration necessary to become good at book cover design. Later, I started working with my wife Yasmin, and together we founded Canvas Graphic Design – a business specifically created to help artists. With our passion for cinema, music and literature, we started to connect with artists because of the personal understanding of the value that they put in their projects. This later extended to album covers and key art for films as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an artist and a writer, and to extend my interest to graphic design was a very natural process to me, since it related to my own needs as an author. While working with my wife, we came with the idea to make this interest official and start our business. What sets Canvas apart from other graphic design businesses is exactly the fact that we are artists as well, who write books, make music, have acted in films- we are currently producing a film ourselves. We understand how to connect to fellow artists and how important the visual aspect is to their work. Working with artists from different backgrounds, we understand that sometimes money can be tight, so we make a conscious effort to remain very budget-friendly. We are simply happy to help someone bring their vision to life, and to integrate our knowledge and passion for culture and art into this job. When artists come to us for help, we make sure we deliver the very best for them, whatever the budget concerns may be.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Since I was very young, I was always an artist, and this of course came with its many ups and downs. I always believed in my creative process and my work, but for long periods of my life this didn’t come with the type of response that one would have hoped. The whole experience made me sympathetic to other artists and their struggles, and also gave me an immense respect for the passion necessary to pursue this craft. This is one of the reasons why Canvas Graphic Design was thought of as a business made to connect directly to other creatives – we respect the fact that your project is intimate, incredibly important to you, and this reflects how we relate to our clients.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
As artists, we at Canvas prioritize a clear, respectful communication to our clients. It’s always our goal that the costumer knows that he or she can always express their wishes and concerns, and they will be met with patience and respect. We make an oath to work on our designs until the client is satisfied. That means we may work through the night, complete revisions, and are open to collaborating with the client and their ideas for the design.
