Judith , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The Box Ladies all started with two ladies — Amy Cannon, a North Carolina native, and Judith Welsh, a newcomer to the area — who couldn’t be any more opposite: a short brunette and a tall blonde. One claiming to be the more operational and business type and the other more the creative type. And yet, neither at all crafty!!! Who knew “opposites attract” could actually turn into a great opportunity to create joy during a pandemic?!
Our first box was created out of a need to bring joy to a team of dancers during the COVID 19 pandemic. How does a team celebrate their season’s achievements during a pandemic? That challenge sparked the idea of putting together fun, thoughtful gift boxes, and they were so well received, we soon started getting orders from all over the community. That’s when The Box Ladies were born!
While we could not be more different, Amy’s love for “PRETTY” things and my flare for “FUN” allows both our personalities to bring a unique and creative twist to curating the perfect gifts.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Our boxes combine both curated products and personal touches to which we add customized messaging, branding, and unique packaging solutions to create the perfect gift. We like to think of the outside of our boxes as a greeting card! If the message fits on the outside of the box we are more than happy to do it! We have had several messages that have been inside jokes between friends… we do not judge.
We are thoughtful, quality-driven and focused on matching our products and services to your unique needs. We truly wish to bring joy to our community of Wake Forest and beyond. Plus, we love partnering with local small businesses and featuring local products in our gift boxes!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The Box Ladies were fortunate to have had a year sharing a work space with another start up business. When the economy continued to struggle after the pandemic, our partnering business was unable to keep their office space. We had some decisions to make as our business was starting to flourish with more corporate clients. We had been spoiled with the large production space and did not have the financial means to manage our own space. While it is not convenient we have moved our business into our homes. My business partner and I laugh and say we are a franchise… Is it ideal? No, but we make it work, because we love what we do!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Social Media has definitely helped to build our brand. However, the relationships we make with our clients has also lead to referrals and repeat business.
