We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Judith Boateng a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Judith, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I have ever taken was quitting my full time job at a hospital to pursue my modeling career full time. I felt it was the right thing to do because I was not happy where I was. The job itself was holding me back from what I really wanted..more free time to do whatever whenever. There was no passion and love for what I did. I was only there for consistent income. I realized that that alone is not a good enough reason to go to work every day. I rather wanted to put my youthful energy into something I know I will enjoy doing.
Judith, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in New Jersey with a Ghanaian background. Growing up in an African household came with certain standards. I was expected to just finish school and get a decent career. For me, that seemed too boring and life is too short. I believe I was fifteen when I started expressing to my parents that I wanted to be a model/actress more so model. When I first started watching America’s next top model, I wanted to be in that show so bad. I had the height(5’11”), the figure, the hair. At the time I thought to myself..if I’m not that good in sports, I might as well use my height for something else extraordinary. I do a lot of print work and runway fashion. I would love to do more commercial and editorial in the near future. I have a good understanding of improvising. Knowing how to make a mistake look like it was naturally part of a project, I am mostly proud of my resilience, confidence, and tireless ambition. It took a lot of trial and error to finally be where I am today. I am a natural daydreamer, visionary. I like to make whatever I imagine come into fruition. My dreams are never just dreams. I make them my goals.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. Other than my artistic passion and my love for the arts. My mission is to be a positive influence on younger girls who look like me. Growing up, I barely saw women who looked like me on screen. I’m glad I see more of that now and I have opportunities to be part of this history as well. I also just want to be remembered.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Having my hard work be noticed and appreciated. People recognizing my worth and knowing not to take me for granted. Being taken seriously. Being able to inspire others.
