Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jude Brandford-Sackey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jude, thanks for joining us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
I’m a huge fan of Michael Jackson, every now and then I go down a YouTube rabbit hole watching his videos, documentaries, and tours. I love his work ethic and his dedication to his craft. I realized he had a real talent of attracting the best talent as part of his band of performers and crew for his work.
In one of the documentaries, I caught the credits with the names of the people who performed with him. i google and emailed every one of them I could find. i wanted to interview someone who had worked with him. 8 months later one of them replied, that was the choreographer for Smooth Criminal Vincent Paterson. I had hit the jackpot, he was releasing his biography and it turned out he wanted to be interviewed. We had the most wonderful conversation about his work with Michael Jackson and even Madonna.
This was possible because I went looking for someone who knew Michael Jackson and I took that leap of faith and reached out.
Here is that conversation https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/judeslist/id1549454570?i=1000593651513
Sometimes you have to take that leap of faith.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
What matters to me is to be able to share my life story in a way that would serve as a reminder that we should live courageously….i want to say this in a way that is clearly and eloquently communicated. And have someone else see that and have that person think YES I can do that too. I want that person to feel connected to me even though we’ve never met. I want to share timeless stories, that feel true now and 10 years from now and even after I’m dead. I want to use my short time on earth to say this through all forms of media, that’s what I want as an artist.
I am a content producer from Accra, Ghana. A writer as well as the host for the documentary-style podcast Judeslist, a weekly show featuring creatives in art, music, film and photography . I tell stories that showcase the emerging creativity from the global south and beyond.
And my goal with Judeslist is to celebrate artistic expression by highlighting stories of artists from diverse backgrounds and to create an archive of stories .
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I first began my podcasting journey by selling my PS4 and TV to generate cash to buy my first microphone and a zoom H6 recorder. This was in 2020 after doing tons of research on basic equipment needed to get the best audio quality for in-person interviews. Fast forward I have now done over 150 interviews and the podcast has garnered over 15,000 listeners across 103 countries. That initial investment of that is still paying off.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
One of the strategies that has worked well for me is building networks and referrals. After most of my interviews with guests I ask them for an introduction to two or three guests they think will be a great addition to be featured on the podcast. This way I was have a growing network of creatives I’m connecting with globally as it also shows proof of familiar names they would know who I have interviewed.
