We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juaquan Herron a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Juaquan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I was a comic book creator for 5 years, and I noticed there was no streamlined process to find markets, conventions and tradeshows to sell my comicbooks. It was also not convient and after working 12 hour days, I would just give up if the search wasn’t easy. I decided to change the narrative and help other small businesses. I was able to pitch to digital Sandbox and was granted 20k to create our MVP
Juaquan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I created a comicbook The Scarlet Knight: Defender of the Block. It was to help the community to overcome those abuses of power in the underserved. After success and making 10,000 dollars in the first year. I knew it was time to push the business forward.
I was born and raised in Kansas City, and I always wanted to fight for the small guy/gal just like my grandmother. She was a volunteer for community builders and known for her kindness in the community. I am trying to carry that torch with my businesses
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Everyone’s journey is not the same when it comes to business or life in general. It’s okay to be a step or two behind…but just keep ousting forward.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We pitched to digital Sandbox at the Small Business Development Center at UMKC. We were awarded 20,000 for our MVP.
We also were apart of Pure Pitch Rally, which local community entrepreneurs awarded us 11,000 for our idea to flourish.
