We were lucky to catch up with Juanjose Rangel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Juanjose thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
When I first started getting paid partnerships, I was in awe about being able to do what I used to do for fun and get paid for it. However, It was a new industry, and I didn’t fully understand how much work it would take for it to become my sole income. I remember I still had to get other jobs to sustain producing the content (traveling and fashion) I wanted to create. I battled with eating disorders and depression for many years without anyone knowing since I wanted to continue being inspirational without realizing that when you are not real, you burn yourself and you are not really influencing people the right way. Today, I prioritize what I want to create and I know that the right opportunities keep coming. It seems that when I became honest with myself the industry also shifted from only aspirational content to what’s real and relatable. I have also managed to enjoy the business part as well as the creative. I don’t stop. And I’m excited to continue growing and using my story to inspire people who struggle with mental health, sexuality, or other issues that impact almost everyone in our society.
Juanjose , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
‘ve been given exceptional opportunities thanks to my way of thinking, if the opportunity presents itself is because God knows I’m ready to try it. Not everything you do will succeed, but failing and succeeding gives you the confidence to continue. At a very young age, I worked with two fashion magazines writing about fashion shows and representing them in events and media work. Fashion was always something that I loved, I just didn’t know I was so good at it till people started noticing it. In the present, I’ve chosen to expand what I create to be able to explore parts of myself and give more value to people that I feel have grown with me. I’m honest and it makes me someone who people can identify with. With so many years doing photography and advertising work, I’ve developed my talents so I do a lot of UGC (user-generated content) for brands and myself. I continue to produce images and videos to advertise on my various platforms and I do social media consulting on the side. I have some other projects in mind that I know at the right moment I will reveal.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
To look your best, you need to be your best. Obsessing what you look like will only bring you endless suffering. Instead, focus on becoming the best version of yourself. Treating yourself kindly will give you results and inspiration to have a successful career in social media and trust me on this, you will look your best.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
