We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Juanita Sierra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Juanita below.
Juanita , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
During the last couple of design school years and while working for high-end design studios, I was able to learn from very talented designers, meet good and bad contractors, and develop relationships with vendors that for the most part, I still keep in contact with today.
While in school and working for these design studios, I was able to work on small projects on my own. even though it was not easy to stay on top of everything while keeping my responsibilities at my job, I have been very selective of the teams I use for my projects and this has allowed me to oversee and complete projects as specified.
After about 7 years of working for someone, a couple of prospects for bigger projects, and a long conversation with my husband, we decided to make Blu Ink Interiors official.
The next couple of months were full of new experiences, a little scary but very exciting!
The first thing to figure out was licensing, insurance, and software; once we had those I was able to move forward with the projects.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a very passionate interior designer, I listen to my clients and translate their vision into functional and stylish spaces. I create partnerships with my clients and together we bring their homes to the next level, where they find a better way of living with my guidance and expertise. Working with my team, clients learn to live better in their homes, we help them find solutions for bad layouts, new looks, or complete renovations. Our services include custom kitchen, bath, and closet cabinetry, decorative and architectural lighting specifications, soft and hard finishes, furniture, and window treatments among others.
The most important detail for me is that clients understand we are a “design translator” for them. We work with their style and our guidance together to bring a more useful and up-to-date look to their space.
We work on mid to high-end projects, which allow us to specify and adjust material selections vs budget. Also, we sell a beautiful custom and semi-custom kitchen and bath cabinetry line from Iowa, so our kitchens and bathrooms are not only functional and beautiful but of great quality.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My husband is not only my life partner but a business partner. Good and bad, right? I can’t say it has been easy, but we have learned to work together, learned from each other, and respect our professional opinions.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is hard to figure out if not your field, but so far I have been able to grow our audience by sharing the process of the projects, pictures, and videos of “before and after”; these seem to bring more people to our profile. It is not easy, but being consistent takes you a long way!
