We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Juanita Corry Jackson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Juanita below.
Juanita, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
I have a heart for the person the world would consider to be in the underserved population. My mentor, Mr. Les Brown, tells everyone who will listen; you have greatness inside of you. One of my missions in life is to start a homeless-to-homeownership program. First, helping people see the greatness inside themselves, then giving them the tools and skills to stand in that greatness and move to the best version of themselves. Sometimes people need encouragement, training, and someone to believe in them until they can believe in themselves.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
How I started in business is a long story. In an attempt to make it short. Let’s start with real estate. I loved everything about it, from the YouTube videos to HGTV of flipping houses. So, it began as a dream. On the weekends, I would look at model homes and plan where my furniture would go or if this would be an investment property that I would flip. All fantasy in my head, but in many ways, I was coaching myself to step into it. I was working a corporate job as a manager, and for the most part, I loved my job but wanted more. So, I decided to get my real estate license in 2008. In 2008 however, the economy was heading into a recession.
In 2010, I resigned from my job and went full-time in real estate. You might think the story ends with me making millions and being happy in realizing my dream. However, it was at the same time I was experiencing a marriage that was falling apart after over twenty years. So, now I am going through a separation that ends in divorce while trying to build a business. I went from a two-income home to no income.
I could go on and on about the valleys I experienced, but let’s get to the good part. The storms that I endured taught me some valuable lessons that I learned about myself. I realized I was more robust and resilient than I could have imagined. Although it took these lessons to teach me, I was created to be creative. I had losses along the way, including divorce, foreclosure, and my mom’s death, but on the other side of those valley experiences was a mountain of blessings.
My business in real estate went on to manifest for real. I have had the opportunity to work with some of the greatest real estate investors in the world. I still have my real estate business today, but I oversee several churches, and I didn’t see that coming at all. I have authored several books and am now an International Bestselling Author. I also have a podcast and own my own TV Channel. So, having said all that. I would not trade the journey because it propelled me to where I am today.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The expectation of my life was somehow supposed to look like the Leave It to Beaver Show. I set up this unrealistic expectation of a two-parent home with two kids, a dog, and a picket fence. So, I always say, if you want to know what your life is supposed to look like, check in with the creator of it. It may surprise you that you were not created to do what your friends, neighbor, favorite celebrity, or anyone else is doing. Here is a clue for us: our life is ours alone. When we consider that there are a little over eight billion people on the planet, not one of us was created to be the same. However, if we focus on everyone else’s life plan on social media, television, friends, etc., we will waste time doing the wrong things because we will be in someone else’s lane versus our own.
I learned this lesson going through a divorce. The truth is there were so many signs that the marriage was over years before we got to legal separation. I was holding on to a dream that was not my reality. If I had checked in with the creator sooner, I could have saved myself a few of the storms.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
For me, walking, living, and being authentically me. There is no one on the planet, no competition, just being the best version of yourself. Because, as I shared earlier, with over eight billion people on the earth. We all have been created uniquely in our own right. I treat people with respect and genuine care. People can smell fake two miles away. Lastly, realize that every person is not your client. Serve those who are your clients well and refer the people who are not your clients out. It’s a win/win.
