We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juan Siu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Juan, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Is all about consistency and delivered practice. I learn to be patient first with myself and trusting the process. For many skills out there, you dont need to have a magic talent but instead the discipline to seat down and put the hours.
A major obstacle is usually myself, my limited believes and sometime the fear of what other people will think or say. Is all in our head since most people are too busy living their life, and ours is too short to waste in the “what if”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Juan, and I came to this country following my “American dream”, 10 years ago, I was an electronic engineer working in oil and gas, and took the jump to cross ocean, and found myself having to work on many industries and odd jobs, until I was able to achieve some stability and the “Dream” of taking advantage of all the opportunities this country can offer. So I started playing with the idea of trying singing during 2021, after quarantine, and joined the “school of rock” were I learn to be more confident with what I can bring to the table, met many people in my situation and many talented musicians, and finally was inspired by then to take on the guitar and do it myself.
I now play music as pay hobby, you could say, try to keep myself busy with at least a gig a month, and what I offer is a joyful (I hope for any one listening) set of songs and good vibes, since many of the subjects or theme I tried to tackle are mostly positives or helpful.
The thing im most proud of, is what the dedication and time I invested, has paid off, and when I released my first single and put a show together, I got to see many of my friends and family supporting me with a smile
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe there got to be more places where music can be share and experience in town. The new industry has made accessible the online sharing but I dont think that is what really connect people. Is a hard situation we are in, and what ill say what would make us improve would be: learn to be respectful of anyone craft, and supportive with attention and praise for those willing to put themselves out there.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There is many books, but I always look back at “How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie ” since is like a bible on how we can all win together if we treat each other with respect, and also the book “Joy by The Dalai Lama” that give us more insight on learning to find happiness within community and how much we humans depend to each other.
Out of those two that I use, for more inner wisdom and some like “ego is the enemy by Ryan Holiday” and the “The subtle art of not giving a F by Mark Manson” that has helped get myself out of my own way and stop letting other people views affect me.
I will definitely suggest “Atomic Habits by James Clear” and “Outliers by Malcom Gladwell” for inspiration, on both what’s possible due to our own hands and what your circumstances can help you as well.
Definitely is a question I have many answers since I love reading and improving myself but ill keep this for now, if you need more suggestion find me in social media!
