We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Juan Rivera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Juan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to professionally become a public artist was around the age of 16 which by then I had already been composing music for about a year, recording on cassette tapes at the time which i vividly recall. I loved it from the beginning and have never lost my passion for the industry.
Juan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Juan Rivera and I am currently 33 years of age. I was born in the Bronx, New York city where I resided there until I was about 10 years old at which point I moved to Puerto Rico with my Grandmother who took care of me and my younger brother when my mother passed away early in life. There I learned to speak Spanish by interacting with people, friends, watching Spanish soap operas, reading, etc. I quickly discovered that I liked reggaeton, rap, hip hop which I listened to through my time spent on the island and that was what led to me wanting to do work of my own such as composing my own songs and recording them for distribution. Things that set me apart from others I believe is my no quitting attitude that helps me achieve anything I set my mind to for overcoming various challenges presented throughout life. I’m proud of what I have accomplished and the people I have met and collaborated with through this journey that keeps on going.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect being an artist is when you hear people say they love your work. I honestly do it all for them as without the audience we are nothing but visionary beings with creative thoughts. As soon as I hear my songs/content being played it brings me joy to see happiness fill each soul with music.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
We can be helped by multiple channels, a simple like and subscribe helps a lot but word of mouth is the biggest way society can support us. This is how any business thrives and is by far one of the best methods of promotion there is as well as reviewing the artist/business equally.
