We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Juan Michelle Martin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Juan Michelle below.
Juan Michelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Starting my practice was driven by grit and a passion to help those suffering with pelvic floor issues, specifically those in pain and those who were pregnant or postpartum. It was definitely challenging early on, figuring out the systems that worked best for my business and client flow, getting my name out into the community and most importantly finding a balance at home. Being a new business owner there is a lot of work that goes into setting things up and the initial push. I also had 2 young kids at the time so it was truly a lesson in learning to balance being a business owner, a wife, a mom and time for self.
I would highly recommend anyone starting out in business to seek out mentorship and guidance. I’ve had some great mentors along the way and they have helped to guide me on this journey.
Juan Michelle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been a physical therapist over 15 years. My background was in sports medicine and orthopedics but I saw a variety of individuals in that mix including pediatric clients and pregnant and postpartum women. Over the years I began to recognize that there was a need for education during pregnancy and postpartum and in general as it related to pelvic health. This was what also prompted me to become a doula. While I had obstetric training and was supporting some clients in birth I really wanted to do more regarding educating and supporting women during this time. I also went on to do post graduate training as a sex counselor as a large portion of my population is individuals with sexual pain or concerns.
Ultimately I was able to marry those disciplines to focus my practice on pelvic, perinatal and sexual health and more importantly to bring a holistic minded approach to caring for these clients. I think that it is very important to recognize that we treat human beings, individuals who while they may be pregnant or have painful sex or have incontinence or any other related diagnosis, they are human beings who also may be parents, employees, have other concerns whether medically or in life and we need to understand the dynamics of how these things impact the individual so we can appropriately address them.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the things I enjoy is teaching. I remember creating a program, Zero to Telehealth back in 2018 to guide individuals on the use of telehealth for their practice. What was interesting was that while I was using this and had successfully coached and trained individuals and business on how to do this, I got a lot of pushback from others who said it wouldn’t work, asking why I’m teaching this and so on. In business there is a time when we have to decide if we continue going for our goals and continuing on the trajectory we are on despite others not believing in where you are going or what you are doing. What was interesting was when we actually had to pivot due to the pandemic many of these individuals reached out.
Ultimately not everyone will believe in your ideas. What matters is if you do. Do you have enough belief to see things through. You can create a business out of anything, but ultimately it’s understanding and going after what you are passionate about.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I absolutely would! Where else can I talk about pee, poop and sex all day! But seriously I love being able to bring awareness to issues that might seem taboo and being able to impact the lives of others in a positive way.
