We recently connected with JUAN GONZALEZ and have shared our conversation below.
JUAN, appreciate you joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
I am in an industry comprised of many companies with very deep advertising budgets and with large investors. When our advertising budget is eclipsed by companies that are blanketing the airwaves, tv commercials, billboards, sponsorships, etc we have to be very creative with what we do and the strategic alliances we create. We learned early on that it all had to do with the good will of our partners, their established reputations and how that would transition over to us. We can do advertising campaigns together with them at a fraction of the cost than a campaign on our own and also laser focused to their existing clientel base. The more niche of a market you are targeting the more specific a campaign you can develop. Then the key factor becomes having the right message and hoping it resonates.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a consultant for quite some time and this was a project I was consulting for. I always like to get involved with projects that are unique and that can be revolutionary in their respective industries. Something that makes such a difference that it will guarantee an industry will change from that moment forward. This project with the mattresses was designed to be a game changer for the industry. We were working to design some of the most iconic mattresses in the world and each with a particular story to tell. We were creating masterpieces and not just collections. Each standing on their own with unique materials, innovative designs and a level of personalization never seen before. We wanted to become the gold standard for the industry and we focused our attention to high end retail, interior designers, building developers, and more.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
My old business partner had moved from Colombia to Spain with his Spanish wife and he was working with her family’s business which manufactured mattresses and pillows in Spain. He wanted to make a change when he started his family and hence moved to the US. During this move he decided to continue with the family business and decided to start importing mattresses to the US. Once he was here he realized he needed consulting and he brought me on board to help. I soon realized that he had an incredible product line but the marketing and strategy needed an overhaul. I started to work on changing the marketing material, the target markets and the overall direction the company was going in. After a few years I decided to take over the company and expand the lines to offer a total line up catering to many different segments in the market.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
We lucked out to have an amazing partner in Europe to make our mattresses and to help us design all of our new models. We did not know about manufacturing on our side but we were quick studies and we had a passion for what we did. We made sure we kept our ears as close to the ground as possible to learn what was missing in the market and what were clients clamoring for. This knowledge allowed us to work closely with our plant and to design the perfect models to make these ideas a reality.
