We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Juan Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Juan below.
Hi Juan, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was always curious to pursue photography as a career, but it would have been in 2019 where a close friend invited me out to shoot his band, since that moment I knew music/concert photography was my calling. I always had a camera lying around but it never felt right to “pose” and “set up” shots for me, capturing others chasing their passions just came easy. You really can’t “plan” live music, It’s that specific frame frozen in time that you can’t ever recreate.
Juan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Yea so my names Juan Garcia and I’m a music photographer in the city of Los Angeles. Even though I specialize in concerts and shows I’d like to think of myself as a “fly on the wall shooter”. I definitely don’t like to just keep myself in the music bubble, if someone has a passion for their craft I’d love to capture it. If it’s behind the scenes of a fashion brand shoot to capturing stills on an independent movie set I’ll be there.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yea so as many photographers know this isn’t an easy industry, especially in the music space. I’ve definitely had my fair share of time passing and letting my camera collect dust. This year specifically I’ve decided to go all in and just talk to everyone and anyone in the space. As my fiancé says I have “no shame” in talking someone’s ear off and quadruple sending emails until I get responses. As competitive as this business is, all the reaching out has paid off in this first half of this year becoming an “in-house” photographer for four venues in the city of LA. Definitely excited to keep the ball rolling and see where this momentum carry’s me.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
A lot of the support you can do for an artist is free, a follow, a share on a post, a comment expressing how you like someone’s work is completely free. Sometimes that’s all the artists need especially at the beginning it can be difference between someone giving up and taking their art to the next level.
