We recently connected with Juan Ferron and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Juan, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Most recording studios focus on one thing at a time. They either just record, or just mix or just master music. They can do it all but they will charge for each one independently or you might have to make different sessions for each part of the process.
In THE ROOM STUDIOS we are well known for focusing on applying in each session a technique called “mixing on the go”. We are mixing at the same time we are recording the track. You will be able to record and listen a 70 to 80 % of the final mix while you are recording. By applying this technique the artist that’s recording can feel more comfortable because when it comes to music: if you sound good, you perform better! If you sound very raw it’s way more difficult to perform at a higher level.
Most of our clients love this technique and in that way we save time because by the end of the recording we just need to get that 30 to 20% of the mix done and voila!… you have a ready to drop song in your hands. And remember when you are paying for studio time, 30 min or even 15 min might be the difference between a good quality song or paying more money to get it done.
Of course, in order to apply this “mix on the go” technique you need to be fast and know exactly what you are doing within your recording software, your analogue gear, the artist vision and your music taste. So, it’s a very high paced, hyper focused, with attention to detail and demanding job. I haven’t seen many audio engineers that can do it as good as we do or as fast as we do while maintaining the high quality of the final product we deliver.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After finishing my Masters in Film Scoring here in Los Angeles (2017), I was approached by the 11 time Grammy nominee producer and engineer Mauricio Garza to become an audio engineer at his studio (THE ROOM STUDIOS) as he knew I was certified by Avid- Pro Tools engineer.
At that time THE ROOM STUDIOS consisted of just two studios in two different locations. Now we have 4 locations and 7 studios in total. I am very proud to say that I’ve been a fundamental part for the development, growth and success of this studios. Not only as the main audio engineer but as co-manager and being in charge of training our interns and new engineers on this “mix on the go” technique. I even helped building with my own hands one of the small studios at one point.
We started by just recording, mixing and mastering music. Now we added also ADR and VoiceOver recordings, podcasts spaces and we are about to open our film scoring services. We are working to move towards becoming a Dolby Atmos certified studio in the near future.
We have many different kind of studios that can adjust to any kind of budget, the amount of people you need to bring to the studio or the type of work you need to do without compromising the quality of the sound, the engineer or the gear.
We have something for anyone from beginners and first timers to Label signed artists.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a creative is looking back at the final product and realize it was created from nothing. From an idea, from thin air, from some sort of inspiration. We had nothing coming into the studio and we leave with a song. Something you can listen to and that will connect with others. Something that is a peace of you, of your emotions, of your feelings, of your thoughts, of your expression as a human being with a soul and living.
For me, any kind of art is amazing. The simple fact that humans can communicate in such different and unique ways is mind blowing to me. Every artist is a reflexion of their own soul and yet, we all can relate in one way or another, making us all one, through art.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Ever since I step foot on a stage and played my first show with my high school band I knew that there was no other thing on earth that would make me feel that way. From that day on, all I wanted to do involved music. I wanted to be in a band and tour the world with my friends. I wanted to meet new people and new places. I also wanted to record and be in a studio. I wanted to leave a legacy and have my work reach places all over the world. I can say I’ve done some of that now, but not all I wanted to do. So that keeps me going and keeps me motivated to continue being an artist.
I have to say that my work has reached places now I would have never imagined like Nigeria, South Africa, Russia, South Korea, Israel, all over Europe and even Australia.
I love what I do and I also do it for that reason. Because I love being around music. Making it, listening to it, producing it, mixing it, you name it.
I truly believe that the day I stop making music would be the day that I die.
