Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Juan Carlos Barreneche. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Juan Carlos, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
From 2018 to 2022 I was able to scale my real estate business from $12,000,000 in annual sales to more than $80,000,000+. During the same exact time period, I was also able to remove myself from the business so that I was actively working less than 5 hours a week. What was my secret? It was leverage. Leverage comes in two forms: systems & people. Systems could include technology, automation tools, & standard operating procedures. People could include both local staff & virtual assistants. I used a combination of all of these to not only scale my business but remove myself from the day to day operations. The trick to balancing all of this is knowing when to implement leverage and to scale too fast.
Juan Carlos, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

At age 28, Juan Carlos Barreneche is one of the most successful agents in the U.S. as well as the founder of the Gold Bar Team, which has more than 273,000 followers on Instagram. His two primary goals in life are to help people and to be financially free. Last year the Gold Bar Team did $65 million in sales. They are currently on track to sell more than $130 million in 2022.
Barreneche began college as a pre-med major with the goal of becoming a surgeon. As he was preparing for an organic chemistry exam during his junior year, he asked himself, “Is this what I really want to do with the rest of my life?”
He quickly realized that if he continued to study to be a surgeon, he would not be financially free for many years. He decided to search Google for “financially free” and ended up spending the night reading Robert Kiyosaki’s book Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
Kiyosaki’s book made Barreneche realize that he needed to be investing in assets like real estate. Rather than going on to med school after graduation, he got his real estate license instead.
He struggled his first year in the business, but then he hired a mentor and coach who helped him build a team that would run without him being there. In other words, he shifted from being an agent to building a business as an asset.
While Barreneche considered starting his own brokerage, he realized that the work that was required meant he would have much less time for production. As a result, he decided to pursue building a team inside a brokerage, eXp, that provided him all the benefits of starting a brokerage with none of the costs.
As Barreneche began building his team, he focused on hiring the right staff, the right managers and the right team members from day one. He currently has team members in New York, Florida, Atlanta, Las Vegas, New Jersey, Connecticut, & Alabama.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy that I used to build relationships was to stop treating them as “leads” and to treat them as humans that I could potentially help. The second I started taking a long term approach & started building relationships with everyone, the only thing that was left for me to do was to nurture those relationships until they sent me referrals. It worked.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media has single handedly allowed me to scale my business faster than any other source. Through leveraging the right hashtags & keywords, I was able to target my ideal consumer. I then created content that would appeal to them in order to add value to their lives. From there selling to them was easy because trust was already established.
