We recently connected with JR Mariano and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, JR, thanks for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to have a regular job?
Being a business owner has its challenges. You have to deal with all sorts of clients, a constantly changing marketplace, and supply chain issues for multiple reasons that are out of your control. Some times are incredibly challenging, and the pressure can get intense.
As a business owner, your main goal is to satisfy the client and provide the best service possible. Unforeseen price increases in materials or supply chain delays can disrupt the entire process and become very frustrating for the client.
The goal is to mitigate the damages and delays caused by the situation and navigate toward the best possible solution to get you and your client back on track.
That is where some of the biggest challenges of a business owner lay.
Sure, there are days when you wish you didn’t feel like you had the weight of the business on your shoulders and didn’t have to deal with issues daily.
Having a regular job as an employee where you can clock in and clock out and receive a paycheck every two weeks has its benefits.
Do I miss these days? Sure, some aspects of it.
However, at some point, you realize that if you set certain boundaries, put in place an efficient way of handling issues, and focus on separating work and family time, you’ll get to a point where you really can take control of your business and how much time to give to it.
The greatest joy of owning a business is that it’s yours. And its success and failure are dependent on how you want the outcome to turn out. And most importantly, you are the boss, and you can decide when and how much time to give to yourself.
Great, I appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is JR Mariano; I own the construction firm Mariano Development, Inc. and the design firm Jamie’s Kitchen & Bath. Our business has been in operation since 2009, and we are a design/build firm with expertise in high-end residential and various commercial remodeling. Our attention to detail, compassion, focus on the client’s wants and needs, innovative and timeless design, and worldwide background in design concepts set us apart.
Having traveled the globe, we have had the opportunity to study design trends internationally. Observing timeless architecture from European countries like Scotland, France, Spain, Switzerland, and The Netherlands have all contributed to our design approach. This experience allows our firm to share a unique vision not limited to a specific region with our clients. We have had the privilege to work on some of the most beautiful homes in Los Angeles, various pharmacies, medical clinics, museums, schools, and iconic hotels throughout California.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Jeremy Bentham once said,” The rarest of all human qualities is consistency.” It is very rare to have a consistent contractor, and I noticed this right away early in the business. Most clients just need someone to show up on time, do a professional job, return calls, and handle any issues. As simple as it sounds, finding a company that can do all these consistently is not as easy. Our firm has been doing this for the past 14 years. Reputation and consistency in this business are everything.
Do you have any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Because our firm deals with a personal space such as one’s home or business, it’s not difficult to forget the time spent working on it together. We like to check in on our clients annually to ensure everything is working well and that they are doing well.
When repairs come up, even if they are minor, we do our best to remedy them promptly.
We also give our previous clients top priority over potential ones.
This fosters brand loyalty and confidence for our client base to refer us as their top choice for design-build needs.
