We were lucky to catch up with Jr Christiansen recently and have shared our conversation below.
JR, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
The idea to start my photography business emerged organically from my experiences in the fashion and creative industries. I’ve always had a passion for photography, using 35mm and disposable cameras growing up, but initially, I didn’t consider it as a career. My creative journey led me to study advertising and fashion merchandising, after graduating from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. I started working in the visual department for Nordstroms and Bergdorf Goodman. After leaving the retail industry I started working as a Fashion Stylist for music artists and styling fashion editorials.
The turning point came during an editorial shoot where the photographer didn’t show up. With my camera always on hand for behind-the-scenes shots, I stepped in to capture the images myself. The positive response from the modeling agencies and the traction the images gained online was impressive. It made me realize that I had a natural talent for photography and really enjoyed it. After shooting part-time for a number of years I decided to take the plunge into full-time photography. The combination of my background in fashion styling, visual merchandising, and my passion for photography led to the birth of my photography business. The idea wasn’t something I planned from the start, but a natural evolution of my creative journey.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Starting out on Social Media, my goal was simple: share my passion for photography and connect with people who appreciate it. I began by curating a portfolio of my best work, focusing on the images that truly represented my style and vision. My main focus has been Fashion & Fitness Portraits. I think it is very important to have a very specific Point of View for your brand and stay focused on the long term vision. Building social media is not the same for everybody but the main thing is stay consistent in posting and engaging with your audience. My advice for those just Starting:
Be Consistent: Post regularly, even if it’s just once or twice a week.
Find Your Voice: Whether it’s through the type of photos you take or letting your personality shine through.
Engage: It’s about connecting. Respond to comments, engage with other creators.
Be Patient: Building an audience takes time. Focus on quality over quantity and let your growth happen organically.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is capturing moments that tell compelling stories, evoke emotions, and resonate with my audience. My goal is to create images that elevate the photography experience and personalities of my clients, making each shot a unique piece of art. I love to prioritize authentic connections, and creativity
to shape each photo shoot experience.
