We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jp Madison. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jp below.
Jp, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to be a comedian at a very young age. I believe I was 5yrs old. Sometimes my cousin Ricky would play Richard Pryor records sit me down in front of the speaker and then go outside and play basketball. I was amazed how the crowd would laugh at what he was saying.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in Cincinnati Ohio. My parents were very loving it was not a dysfunctional upbringing at all except for the fact that my mother kept foster kids who had really bad trauma and came from broken homes. My father was a truck driver/ preacher. he fought in the Vietnam war. I’m a very creative person. When I was a kid I always had my head in the clouds. I knew I wanted to be a comedian like Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. When I was in high school I took photography and fell in love with taking pictures. I was a natural at it. When I turned 18yrs old I called Ray Combs comedy club in downtown Cincinnati. I scheduled my first show a open mic on Feb 4 1994. I was so nervous I got a nosebleed. I did really well on that show. While I was on stage I got a huge rush of uphoria like a strong high. I knew I would be doing comedy for the rest of my life.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I started stand up comedy in 1994. I was just a baby. I first started doing shows around the city until I got a manager and he started booking me all over the country. I did BET’s comic view and my career was going great. I worked the road aa a comic until I moved to LA in 2001. I was use to doing 30-45 min sets on the road but in LA you only get 3 minutes. I struggled with the LA comedy scene and need up doing more photography than comedy. That ended up turning into a 14yr break from comedy. As the years went by I really missed it. I feel everything happens for a reason. I got new inspiration and all these things were starting to happen in my life that was leading me back to stand up comedy. So in Aug. of 2024 I started doing comedy again. my first show back was Aug. 6 and while I was onstage I got that spark again. so my plan now is to move to Austin Texas and do the the show Kill Tony.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
What’s driving my creative force is my need to create and entertain. some people are just born to do certain things. My ultimate goal is to be the best comedian I can be and make a nice living at it.
