We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jozlyn Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jozlyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
First and for most I will always be grateful to have been born with the raw talent that I have. I can honestly and truly say that I’m blessed to be able to make a living off of just being me and using the talents that I have in my bag. Now I will say sometimes I do ponder about what it would be like if I had perused the career that I wanted. I always told everybody growing up that I wanted to be a cardio thoracic surgeon. There is a story behind it though.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Being able to utilize my talents and, potentially make a living off of just me has always been something I wanted to do. Once I got to a age that I was almost an adult I had a photographer reach out to me and the rest is history. I’ve moved on to do many different things and I’m truly grateful for it all. I started off taking pictures and doing fashion shows. So I have a little bit of training in that field. I’m also a brand ambassador for a few of my friends. Shout out to Arianna when she does my lashes I swear I get compliments all day, I love them everytime I swear @lashed.by.arii on Insta. A mutual friend of mine has some dope ass apperal my favorite is the long sleeve. Although there is a cute cropped hoodie too @rblapperal2021. A lovely new friend of mine is a talented makeup artist she beats down @makeupby..karra. Along my path I’ve been in music videos for Detroit rappers which was a pretty sweet experience. I’m part of a group called Blazebaddies. Shout out to Justin foreal he’s a real one. I’m also a runway/dancer for a group called Embrace. Jojo asked me to be a part of it and my inner child lit up. I used to dance as a child I did tap, ballet, jazz, hip-pop, lyrical the whole nine yards. It’s been so fun there’s nothing else I’d rather do every Sunday morning.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Honestly I will say when your in public and people recognize you and express the fact that they love your content. It makes my heart smile when people aren’t afraid to come say hi because I’m not famous or a celebrity I’m just a normal human being. It makes me feel like I’m doing something right because what I want to do is bigger than just me.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Most definitely would be that your going to get paid every step of the way. In this lifestyle you have to have done a certain amount of things for you to just be able to demand money. You gotta find your people and work with them to grind to the top. When you know who you are though I will say that you should one hundred percent not be scared to require compensation.
