We were lucky to catch up with Joycelyne Figueroa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Joycelyne thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I would hope my legacy will be to impact and guide others back to what gives them the most joy and peace. I believe through society’s programming, we are taught to live in ways of survival mode depending on generational trauma and environmental structures. There are many grounding tools and resources that can help someone in getting back to deeply rooted self love and mindfullness.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a Latina growing up in North Philadelphia my family inherited generational cycles of trauma and lacked emotional intelligence but I knew my empathic heart was meant to share the wisdom I learned. I remember in grade school trying to understand why my nervous system was dysregulated (PTSD). I remember having a teacher (Ms. Cook) that would mentor me, give me space to process my emotions and allow me to feel (cry) without shame. In high school, I was so afraid to be vulnerable/build relationships and I knew it stemmed from not having a healthy emotional foundation of support from both parents. After years of failed relationships and repeated generational cycles, I started seeking therapy in my late 20s and learned about the effects that childhood trauma can create like mental health illnesses, lack of self worth, repeated patterns & more. The healing journey towards more self-compassion is not easy but I know the knowledge I am learning will help me, family generations to come and my community.
For the last 7 years, I’ve mentored with Big Brothers Big Sisters, created Self-Love workshops, and shared healing and mindset tips within my online community. I relocated to Tampa almost 2 years ago to heal around nature, meet more parts of myself and create opportunities outside of my norm.
As a mindset mentor/coach, I am most known for creating content from lifestyle around wisdom, self-love, and mental health. I specialize in reminding others of their worth and power. I believe we don’t belong in boxes and we are full of multiple purposes. I love to inspire others to heal through creating art, relatable content and working towards their dreams.
This season I’m focusing on creating more workshops and sharing resources around emotional intelligence/regulation, healing inner child trauma, and entrepreneurship. I’ve created Journals that I know would help other release their thoughts for their mental health. I also have one on one session if someone needs guidance on their self-love journey.
I believe mindset and healing are essential foundations towards growing and accomplishing goals. I also love to emphasize the importance of claiming your power after trauma by allowing more Joy (fun, art, beauty, and laughter) into your life.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The time I had the pivot in my business was when I decided to relocate to Tampa and I went from vending my merch at women empowerment events to marketing online. The change in business techniques helped me to step out of my comfort zone in person and online. I’m learning now how to attract my tribe in a new city, it has been a challenge but worth it.
