Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joyce Yueyi Xing. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joyce Yueyi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Over the past few years, I have produced several films of different lengths and genres with young Asian female filmmakers. It’s always a pleasure for me as a creative producer to see these original stories from these new voices. Among the short films I produced, In the Dusk follows an elder Shaman in the Mongolian grassland searching for the rebirth of her grandson; Good Taste features a young Korean woman in New York City going through a horrifying date night with a white couple; Yu Under Water presents the brief encounter of two Chinese young women during a hike. Each of these stories has its own unique perspectives while they all focus on different scenarios in our daily lives that are rarely represented on the big screen. Making these stories alive is what I find most meaningful in my work.

Joyce Yueyi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my production company right after I graduated from film school to facilitate my day-to-day work as a freelance producer. My first few projects were all narrative short films, which were similar to the school projects I did. Then a cinematographer I had worked with reached out to me for a promotional interview shoot for a game company. Both the client and the agency were in China while the talent was in New York. That’s why they needed me as a NYC-based producer who speaks both English and Mandarin.
Soon afterward, I got more and more opportunities because of my bilingual skills and the ability to facilitate remote monitoring for international clients. Meanwhile, a chance to line produce a VogueFilm for Vogue China opened another path for me – fashion. When working with indie brands, we seek culturally relevant narrative and cinematic presentations like the narrative films I did. With these fashion projects, I got to practice my producing skills more frequently and gradually created a sustainable career.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To highlight the beautiful or emotional moments from the daily mundane is one of my key motivations for my creative journey. No matter it’s a commercial or an independent film, short or long, capturing those moments as visual content creators and presenting them to others, a wide audience if possible, is always my goal as a creative producer. I think being able to find the beautiful and emotional moments in our daily life is important to me, and to many who are living under the growing pressure of the modern world.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Nearly all my new clients are introduced by people I have worked with. As a producer, for every project, I get to meet a handful of cast and crew, and they get to know me as a bilingual creative producer who can do narrative films, documentary films, product commercials, and fashion shoots. Then when people ask them for a New York-based Mandarin-speaking producer, they’d think about me and recommend me. I really appreciate this way of forming connections and getting recognized by people I’ve worked with.
