We recently connected with Joyce Wong and have shared our conversation below.

Joyce, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?

I was a high school English teacher and I was completely burnt out. I was unhappy, stressed, and under appreciated and I knew I needed a lifestyle change. So I took a gamble on myself.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

As a former teacher, I knew I needed a career change and I couldn’t see myself working for anyone else. I had already dabbled with this small business for years and I had to see if I could grow. I started off in 2013 making party decorations such as banners and cupcake toppers and have grown to making accessories for adults, kids, and pets. Stinky Toes Creations is a true labor of love. No one sees all the little details I put into my products, but that’s ok. As long as they are satisfied with the end result.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?

I have 4 nieces. And during any local event my oldest niece comes with one or two or three of the others to help support me as most of the time I am all alone. They witness my sales, my slow days and my patience. And at the end of the events, they help me break down and load my car. After one event, I promised myself that I would do whatever it took to demonstrate to them that anything is possible with hard work and determination. That even as a woman and not just any woman, an Asian American woman, that I can thrive. I do this for them.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

Weekend after weekend, I ride early, load my car and vend and markets. I can make $1 of $500, it doesn’t matter. The point is getting my name and product out there, connecting with the different communities and building my brand with people.
