Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joyce & Debra Glenn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joyce & Debra , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects we’ve worked on was publishing our book, “Keeping Your Crown.” We were raised to be strong, educated, ambitious and conscious black women. Advancing the Black community by discussing black issues and providing solutions is a huge passion of ours. This book sheds light on overcoming systematic issues and social dysfunctions in our community to assist black women in learning how to fully love themselves to advance their own lives and, eventually, the state of Black America.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We got our start in entertainment after being scouted by a modeling agent at age 16. Our resume consisted of cosmetic ads, hair ads, editorial spreads, catalogues and music videos. After modeling for a few years, our interests expanded to acting and hosting. We landed roles in films, television, and commercials and hosted several TV shows and industry events. We’ve appeared on Fast Five, Life 101: Angel’s Secret, The Game, Single Ladies, The Rickey Smiley Show, Boomerang, American Soul, Someday At Christmas and other soon-to-be released projects. After pursuing acting and hosting, we ventured into merchandising, launching our own personalized items.
One of our latest ventures is the launch of our cosmetics line, Mirror Image Cosmetics. Mirror Image is a high-quality makeup line for the modern, dynamic woman, celebrating versatility and self-love! The line features top-of-the-line highlighter and bronzer palettes, elegant lashes and high-intensity lipstick.
In addition to our entrepreneurial endeavors, we have also added the title of author to our list of achievements with the release of Keeping Your Crown: The Black Woman’s Guide to Reclaiming Greatness. Keeping Your Crown is a nonfiction, motivational, self-help book designed to inspire and challenge black women to raise their overall standards to achieve success in their personal lives and in turn, make a positive impact within the black community!
Aside from our careers, we have both obtained BBAs in accounting, graduating Magna Cum (Debra) and Suma Cum (Joyce) Laude, primarily funding our education with academic scholarships. We are also members of the prestigious business honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
We had to unlearn two things:
1. Don’t wait until you feel completely ready or informed to pursue your craft or business. You will never be ready. The only way to accumulate the knowledge you need to be successful is through trial and error. Making mistakes is an unavoidable part of gaining wisdom and expertise. So, despite feeling unready or unprepared, move forward with creating your vision!
2. Let go of perfectionism! This concept goes hand in hand with our earlier point. Getting caught up in trying to be perfect interferes with creativity, will make you question your choices to a degree that is unhealthy and will ultimately halt your progress. Don’t try to do anything perfectly, just create with passion!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Although being a creative comes with a lot of uncertainty, hardship, and struggle, once you finally get to a point where you are actually making a living off your art, nothing is more liberating. Having the ability to make your own income without relying on anyone else for a paycheck is one of the most empowering feelings in the world.
