Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joyce Carlisle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joyce, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I wish I had started my business sooner It is such a rewarding job. I worked in corporate America for over 30 years and this is so much more rewarding. I help people needing help with their legal documents sometimes in emergency situations, I help with real estate document for people selling or buying a home. I love LOVE. I marry people in formal ceremony’s and I do elopements on short notice which is always interesting and very special. I started this business after moving to Virginia in 2012, tried corporate America again and decided I was just tired of working hard for other people and not being appreciated. I’m also a Medicare consultant. All of my businesses are service related, and I get to help people which make me happy.

Joyce, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have worked in the customer service field in corporate America for over 30 years and once I moved to Virginia in 2012, I continued with corporate America. I also started in the Insurance industry and really like the field but not in the corporate setting, so I became independent and later worked for several captive agents and that was the turning point for me. I started my mobile notary and loan signing business but kept my insurance license active. After a little while I became a Wedding Officiant and as they say the rest is history. Keeping my insurance license active was also key to being a Medicare consultant. I love what I do and when I do my job, I feel value and appreciated and that is very important in anyone life. I make my own schedule; I don’t have to beg for time off. I build my schedule around my family and my life, I have work life balance.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2016 I lost my son after a long battle with his illness, but I learned so much from him about always being willing to explore what makes you feel valued. I was a care giver for him in his last days and I found in corporate America don’t care about you being a care giver, I felt they only care about their bottom line. This was the start of my transition from corporate America. It took a couple of years but i did a lot of research on each industry, I chose ones that would make me feel valued.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I was working for a captive insurance agent and after several times of being disrespected and not feeling valued I decided to make the move to start my own business. I used my salary the last 3 months of my employment to buy all the equipment I needed and would use my savings if needed to finance the business but as it turned out I did not have to use any of my savings the business was successful from the start. The most important thing is to have a plan.
