We were lucky to catch up with Joyce Burson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joyce , thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the name Cute pieces based on my years of working in the fashion industry. I have worked in many high end retail stores where customers didn’t necessarily need a full wardrobe or come to by everything they saw. Most women have a large wardrobe and need a key piece that could make their outfit pop! So I came up with the name cute pieces so when you shop with me you don’t feel like I’m going to sell you everything but just what works for what you’re trying to put together. You may have the shoes and just need the dress or you may have the dress and need a scarf or a sweater! Fashion is all about creating a style, creating a unforgettable moment. Thanks what cute pieces represents. We give you stylish pieces that stand out and of course always are cute! It’s like art… collecting that piece that will last a lifetime and makes a statement.
Joyce , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I do my best to have a cute piece for any client I come across. I am very passionate about servicing the plus size market and creating and getting pieces that not only work for their body type but make sure it’s something I would wear also. Cute pieces not only provide pieces from from hand picked designers we also create and design pieces that we know will work for our clients.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started Cutepieces initially with $300 and secured the name on Godaddy. I started finding pieces that were unique and started with small inventory I continued to buy and sell to clients in my community and then eventually went online.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My dream was always to open my first boutique on my hometown of Ohio, which I did. I soon learned that it would be no easy task. I raised my 2 children as a single woman and trying to run business and juggle motherhood was not easy. You think you will get the support of family and friends but you realize it’s you that has to push and make things happen. I learned that without God and my faith nothing is possible and that still resonates with me to this day. People will watch you to see if you will fail before they support but I am survivor and I know independence and running your business gives you the opportunity to do what you love and show people it can be done.
