Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joy Miyatake. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Joy, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
The moment I discovered yoga therapy from my mentor. He showed me the path to sobriety.
It turned me around from living in the darkest days..
I had learned to forgive myself. I wasn’t the addict, I was the trauma survivor! In the moment of my turn around, I feel I moved from the shame and guilt feelings to courage. Knowing that I had accumulated habits that weren’t working for me. Learning new tools of self regulation and deep work to move through pain changed my reality. And even these words aren’t accurate for what I feel now.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I work as a yoga therapist. For those who want to travel with me for deeper work I run events where we can go even deeper and have the fun of learning meditation in water.
Since I am a 4th generation photographer that took to life underwater, I also capture images underwater.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
If I didn’t go through years of my dark night, I don’t think I could learn compassion on the level I have learned it.
I worked with Cambodian genocide survivors, veterans with PTSD and adoptive sports. This gave me just a new depth of understanding of the human spirit I could not put a price on.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Posting and being active on social media. Showing up in community.
This is something that worked for me, but it doesn’t necessarily work for everyone.
