We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joy McLaughlin-Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joy , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Talk to us about building your team? What was it like? What were some of the key challenges and what was your process like?
It all started with just me. A lot of my team members came from being a client. They went through my program and got major success so I offered them the opportunity to come back and help others by being coaches. My administrative team all came through referrals from friends who were using their services. Building a team is a lot Like building a house. Your foundation is important. The blueprint, paperwork and training is just as important. The most important thing is becoming a different version of yourself mentally, physically and financially to to be in position to maintain the growth of expansion that comes with building a team.
Joy , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a shift speaker, coach and Rebrandologist™️. I help faith-based entrepreneurs expand, rebrand and maximize revenue by making the shift from trading time in for money to making their money work for them. I believe that every level of evolution, you must have a mindset shift and become another version of yourself. That’s the process of rebranding yourself from inside out. My background is In the beauty industry so it’s what makes me unique when I am working with brands. I sold my salon to launch my consulting company and needed someone to help me make the shift from familiar to unfamiliar. There was no one available so I became what I was looking for. The person that helps others get shift together. One thing that helped me make the shift is the passive income I created before selling my business. One problem that kept me in struggle during my early years in business in that I only made money when I touched hair but when I didn’t I was struggling. Once I learned the power of multiple income sources, I wanted to help others do that. My goal with every client is to help business owners make money in their sleep and position their foundation for elevation.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
That would be During Covid when I was no longer able to Travel to speak so I showed up by live video every Monday for a year. I turned my books into digital products. I heard a friend say when you find your River, you find your streams of income. My book became my river and I created 7 income sources from that during Covid. I had to pivot how I was doing business because I was not a big social media person at all. This book allowed me to create 6 figures as a new consulting business and now I use this blueprint to help others.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
Yes, I did sell my business. Be sure all brand stuff you are selling is owned by you from trademarks, copyrights and everything that business name is connected to, hire an attorney and have your book keeper assist with providing paperwork for all things numbers. Don’t mention you selling right away unless it’s necessary. Get docs rolling, buyer in place and position the business for smooth transition.
