We recently connected with Joy Hsieh and have shared our conversation below.
Joy, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar you earn in a new endeavor is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
I first started my freelancing photography looking for potential client in the Facebook group (I believed). Asking for newborn baby model calls, giving free high resolution photos as gift in return for participating for the model call and turned out the clients would like to purchase more edited photos at the end so that’s pretty much how I first started doing my business to do model calls, do more practices and build my portfolio at the same time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Joy Hsieh and I graduated from Art Center College of Design major in Photography and Imaging in 2014. Although I was mainly focused in animal photography during and after the school years, I started to find newborn photography as much as challenging as animal photography and since I never learned how to do the newborn photography before, I pretty much learned from scratch by myself and took some mentor classes on the internet group and went to a demo class from another famous newborn photographer. The reason I stayed focus on the newborn photography is because it was not only challenging but also fun and satisfied to accomplished a session and deliver the photos for their family to have and keep forever since it’s their bundle of joy’s very first photo session.
What I set myself from others I believe is that I always challenge myself and compete with myself from each session. I want to see improvements from session to session. As long as I improve from last session or learned another new skill I know I’m learning and improving.
I’m proud of what I do because I’m capturing the moments for families to keep for their lifetime. The most precious memories I would say. And so far, I have not yet receive any complaints or any bad reviews through out the business years so I suppose my clients are happy with what I provide them so far. Which is also a compliment to myself and what keeps me going for what I’m doing.
I’m not like JC Penny giving out just photos, all my photos are edited high resolution photos which the quality differences you can see for yourself. Therefore, in the end, people choose what they want and paid for what they choose.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think positive reviews helps build my business reputations. True and honest reviews are the best story teller. Therefore, I always ask my clients to leave me the reviews of their true feelings and experiences.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I personally think that by capturing the precious moments for families to keep for their lifetime and when they decide to revisit me each year is the most rewarding. That means the bond and trust we build through out years and those families likes the works I provided them. So that’s most rewarding to me as an artist and creative.
